How can a returning student succeed in challenging engineering courses?

Hey y'all, I'm an old guy going back to school for the first time in 20 years for civil engineering. My next semester consists of calculus, physics and statics and strength of materials... I expect I'll need some help and advice and this looks like the place to be.
