AI Thread Summary
To convert grid units to miles in geometry, it's essential to know that each grid represents 1/10 of a mile. The distance from the picnic area at (2,2) to the swimming pool at (-3,-1) is calculated as 5 and 4/5 grid units. To convert this distance to miles, multiply by 1/10, resulting in 0.58 miles. For additional conversions, 2 grid units equal 0.2 miles, 3 grid units equal 0.3 miles, and 4 grid units equal 0.4 miles. Understanding these conversions is crucial for accurately determining distances in grid-based problems.

What had to be plotted:
Ill just say what's needed for this problem
S (swimming pool. (-3,-1)
P (picnic. (2,2)
Ok here are the instructions: Each Grid represents 1/10 of a mile.

Question)
How far is it from picnic area to the swimming pool? Give your answers in grid units and in miles.

i keep getting 5 and 4/5 i don't know how to change that to miles and please if someone can check if that's right in the first place

Use common sense:
If ONE grid unit is ONE-TENTH of a mile,
How much is:
2 grid units?

3 grid units?
4 grid units?
1039 grid units?

5 + 4/5 grid units?

I picked up this problem from the Schaum's series book titled "College Mathematics" by Ayres/Schmidt. It is a solved problem in the book. But what surprised me was that the solution to this problem was given in one line without any explanation. I could, therefore, not understand how the given one-line solution was reached. The one-line solution in the book says: The equation is ##x \cos{\omega} +y \sin{\omega} - 5 = 0##, ##\omega## being the parameter. From my side, the only thing I could...
