How Does a Solar-Powered Air Conditioner Work?

AI Thread Summary
Solar-powered air conditioners typically rely on solar energy to operate, but they are not standalone units; they require a connection to a solar power system. Current technology suggests that while solar generators can power traditional air conditioning units, a self-contained solar air conditioner is not feasible due to high energy demands. Innovative concepts, such as using a Stirling engine with a buried fluid loop for cooling, have been proposed but remain theoretical. The discussion highlights a lack of significant breakthroughs in creating fully solar-powered air conditioning systems. Overall, while solar energy can assist in cooling, practical applications are still limited.

hey frenz ,
Plz let me know about an Airconditioner working on solar energy. How does it work.Wheather any reaserch is going on this project?
Is any breakthrough has happened?Any help is welcome.

What do you mean an air-conditioner that runs on solar energy? Most electrical air conditioners are connected to some sort of power supply and yes, that power supply can be a solar generator but as far as i know, there's no such thing as a stand-alone air conditioner that runs on solar power. They require a LOT of power that solar energy cannot supply on a self-contained unit. You can have one that is powered by a solar grid that's attached to the air conditioner... but I just don't see anyone even wanting to make it into a self-contained unit.

Well if someone asked me to design one I would consider a sterling engine (solar powered though focusing by mirrors or whatever) running a pump that moves fluid around a closed loop. This loop would be buried in the ground where the temperature is a constant 50 some degrees F year round. Run this fluid through a heat exchanger and you have an air conditioner. A solar powered heat pump for heating in the winter seems kind of silly though so I doubt I would expand on this idea.

Solar powered fan, blowing across a block of ice! Air- conditioning!

I'm thinking "solar-powered umbrella"...

Hi all, I have a question. So from the derivation of the Isentropic process relationship PV^gamma = constant, there is a step dW = PdV, which can only be said for quasi-equilibrium (or reversible) processes. As such I believe PV^gamma = constant (and the family of equations) should not be applicable to just adiabatic processes? Ie, it should be applicable only for adiabatic + reversible = isentropic processes? However, I've seen couple of online notes/books, and...
I have an engine that uses a dry sump oiling system. The oil collection pan has three AN fittings to use for scavenging. Two of the fittings are approximately on the same level, the third is about 1/2 to 3/4 inch higher than the other two. The system ran for years with no problem using a three stage pump (one pressure and two scavenge stages). The two scavenge stages were connected at times to any two of the three AN fittings on the tank. Recently I tried an upgrade to a four stage pump...
