AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on the role of lasers in ion thrusters, with one participant questioning the accuracy of information regarding laser usage. They reference a patent that suggests lasers may heat fuel for ionization, contrasting this with the typical electron bombardment method described in Wikipedia. Confusion arises from the lack of mention of lasers in standard ion thruster descriptions. The conversation highlights the need for clarification on how lasers might function within the ion thruster process. Overall, the relationship between lasers and ion thrusters remains unclear and warrants further investigation.

Exactly how does the ion thruster rely on the laser in it's process exactly. I have been told that the ion thruster uses a laser but I wasn't given anymore information on what it exactly does.

I looked up ion thruster on Wikipedia and didn't see anything about a laser. Perhaps you misheard?

It looks like from that abstract that the laser is just used to heat the fuel to ionize it. Note, that's different from how the wiki description works, which uses electron bombardment to ionize the fuel.

I think it's easist first to watch a short vidio clip I find these videos very relaxing to watch .. I got to thinking is this being done in the most efficient way? The sand has to be suspended in the water to move it to the outlet ... The faster the water , the more turbulance and the sand stays suspended, so it seems to me the rule of thumb is the hose be aimed towards the outlet at all times .. Many times the workers hit the sand directly which will greatly reduce the water...
