I just wanted to know what the motivation was behind everyone's usernames. If there was no reason, then just say that, but if there was a reason, please share it with us.

No reason its just my name but then again that's a reason so there is a reason to my name.

Well, Andy, that's as good a reason as any. Thanks for your response.

Pop quiz - 4 gold stars to the person who gets it right.

What did I say last time this question was asked (on PF2)?

I always liked Monty Python's "Njorl's Saga" skit. My name is not Njorl, or N. Jorl.

1st Voice Over: This little-known Icelandic saga, written by an unknown hand in the late thirteenth century, has remained undiscovered until today. Now it comes to your screens for the first time. Fresh from the leaves of Iceland's history. The terrible 'Njorl's Saga'.

(Cut to Viking.)

Viking: It's not that terrible.

(Cut to landscape. The announcer appears in the comer of the shot.)

Announcer: No, I meant terribly violent.

(Cut to Viking.)

Viking: Oh yeah, yeah.

Monthy Python are superb. The first question to a lion tamer will probably not be 'has he got his own hat?' ...
I was formerly known as carsten, now I use an acronym, guess what...

Well, on the show "Seinfeld" the K-man was Kramer. That would make the J-man... OH MY GOD! YOU'RE JERRY SEINFELD!

Wow.

It's what the guys at the shop call me. In fact that is the name on my toolbox! I'm slightly taller than average, somewhat lean, and my appearance has occasionaly been described as "severe".

  • #11
I rock climb professionally so I just thought it fit.

Hmm, I'm wicked desperate for stars, so I'll guess... your name
Actually about the stars, I don't see stars anymore, do they even exist? I see a few chance people are lucky enough to have title's already, but I see no stars. Why?

Har-dee-har-har.

Yes, that's how I came up with my username, but the response I am fishing for was a lot funnier than that.

As for the stars, I think they're gone. But you should be able to enter your own title by going into the User CP (Control Panel). However, swear words are blocked out, and for regular members, so are "PF Mentor" and "PF Advisor".

  • #22
damgo, did you used to be Alis in PF v2.0?

  • #23
This was my nickname when i was in the Navy. Now only my closest friends call me by it.

  • #24
Tom -- yeah. My real name is Ali; I use alis as an account name.

I used to be a big raver, as in outdoor dance party goer. I've used it in chat rooms, forums etc. for years. So Raavin is a misspelling of raving. Now I'm a dad so that's all in the distant past.

Raavin (many a night in my past looking like this  )

  • #26
^^^ lol, I never would've thought that. that picture looks too sinister for even an ex-raver... better watch out for the PLUR police. ;)

  • #28
I'll tell you but first I'm curious to know what you think it means.

  • #29
Your favorite comic book character is Cyclops?

well i once knew someone called j-man simply because he was too stoned to remember his real name, he was a legend and was never seen without a really fat joint hanging from his lips, so we called him j-man. then one day i saw him in a suit WITHOUT A JOINT and my dreams were shattered.

it's not *siff* YOU is it j-man?

well my name comes from the character/title of my fave book by herman hesse, steppenwolf (aka harry haller) believed he was half wolf, half man, it is a damn fine book...

Thanks for all of the responses, everyone, it's made for some interesting reading.

LaserEyes, I really don't know (my first thought was a metaphor for deep insight, but now I really doubt it). Tell us.

  • #32
When I used to learn martial arts the instructor once said to me that when I look at someone I look with laser eyes. He meant that I can see through the mask that people wear to what's inside.

I'm sure that Iv'e related this before, but:

It comes from a character I developed for something like a RPG, years ago. I wanted a mythology based name to fit the background of the story, and as the character could have been said as having two sides to his character, I chose the Roman God Janus. (And I just couldn't resist the introduction: "Hello, I'm Janus, and yes, I am a two-faced SOB". )

my sn comes from 2 video games. Psyber is from Psymon Stark in SSX tricky, and Freek is from the game Freekstyle.

Close, but no gold star...
Then again, I could be Jerry Seinfeld.

That's closer. (jk)

Actually, my real name is John, hence the 'J' and I'm male, as implied by the last part.
Oh, and I'm lazy, so I didn't try too hard to come up with a cool name. (But I ended up with a cool name anyway, how lucky.)

Because your name is Tom. And then some funny joke, maybe about the 'ol Tom & Jerry cartoon.

I t'ought you'd neva ask.

When I was younger, my favorite author was Bruce Coville (because I love science fiction). In his series, that started with Aliens Ate My Homework, the "Mentats" were a group of extremely intelligent creatures, who were trained on the planet "Mentat". Then, when I got a litte older, I read the "Dune" books, and loved them. In the Dune books, the Mentats are a group of highly trained, very intelligent, humans, whose memories are like that of our computers'. These are the two sources for my name (not that I think these describe me in any way , they don't).

Extra insentive: I thought it sounded pretty cool  .

I'm with Russ Watters, but not really uncreative, and only sometimes lazy. (physically & intellectualy, but not often)

  • #40
Took my first name, decided to use my nickname. Truncated my last name to a single letter.

Was definitely not caught by the creativity bug when I signed up here.

A few years ago, i had quickly make up a nick for some chat room or something like that, and only thing i could think of at the time was a song title of a Finnish pop/rock/punk/progressive group called CMX, and so it kinda stuck. The rocket base thingey i found up later.

  • #42
Well before I tell you keep in mind I made it when I was 11 for my screen name and then I continued it useing different years... ok you ready? Nick (my name) + cool+year=Nicool003

haha well that is mine. I was considering changing it for PF 3 because I have had it as screen names and usernames for so long but it's traditional. Plus everyone knows me by it

  • #43
I thought to my self, "What would be a good name to use as an alias?"

  • #44
I was trying to come up with an MSN username that conveyed the idea of thinking, or thoughtful...without me having to add numbers to the end of the word.

This ended up being the first free "thinking" name I came up with.

The rest is history ;)

Main Entry: neb·u·la
Pronunciation: 'ne-by&-l&
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural neb·u·lae /-"lE, -"lI/; also -las
Etymology: New Latin, from Latin, mist, cloud; akin to Old High German nebul fog, Greek nephelE, nephos cloud
Date: circa 1738
1 : any of numerous clouds of gas or dust in interstellar space
2 : GALAXY; especially : a galaxy other than the Milky Way galaxy -- not used technically
- neb·u·lar /-l&r/ adjective

Nebula is also the name of a bizarre Incubus song, and for the record Incubus just so happens to be my favorite band. I like Astronomy and Nebulae are IMHO some of the coolest celestial objects to look at, even though they are just clouds of gas and dust.
