Initial displacement of a midpoint of a string?

AI Thread Summary
The discussion focuses on calculating the initial displacement, velocity, and acceleration of the midpoint of a string using the equation x(t)=Asin(wt+phi). By substituting t=0 into the equation, an initial displacement of 1.60x10^-3 m is determined. To find velocity and acceleration, the equation is differentiated, and t=0 is applied again. The proposed method is confirmed as correct. The solution effectively addresses the homework problem.

Homework Statement

Then we are asked to determine the initial discplament, velocity and acceleration of the midpoint of the string.

Homework Equations

I guess we should use equation x(t)=Asin(wt+phi)

The Attempt at a Solution

My attempted solution is to use the above equationa and put t=0. That would give us an initial displacement of 1.60x10^-3 m, and for the velocity and acceleration differentiate the initial equation and again put t=0.
Is that a good solution? Thank you

That is perfect.

Thread 'Collision of a bullet on a rod-string system: query'
In this question, I have a question. I am NOT trying to solve it, but it is just a conceptual question. Consider the point on the rod, which connects the string and the rod. My question: just before and after the collision, is ANGULAR momentum CONSERVED about this point? Lets call the point which connects the string and rod as P. Why am I asking this? : it is clear from the scenario that the point of concern, which connects the string and the rod, moves in a circular path due to the string...
