Is Civil Engineering Suitable for Outdoor Enthusiasts?

AI Thread Summary
Finding a job that allows for outdoor work can be challenging, especially in fields like engineering, where many positions are office-based. While some civil engineering specialties may offer occasional outdoor work, most roles involve significant time spent at a desk. An environmental engineer shared her disappointment about the limited outdoor opportunities in her job, suggesting that those passionate about environmental issues might find more fulfillment in policy work. In contrast, careers in wildlife and fisheries biology, as well as ecology, typically involve substantial outdoor activity. Foresters, for example, often split their time between fieldwork and office tasks, highlighting the appeal and importance of outdoor-focused careers in environmental fields.

Is it easy to find a job where you don't have to sit behind a desk? I would like to be able to work outside. I am just finishing up all my general engineering classes and I have found them to be very boring so far. I am considering doing something other than engineering. I am considering switching to wildlife and fisheries biology with a minor in environmental science and policy.

That's quite a difference. If you like to work outside, then I think you should switch. Depending on what civil specialty you pursue, you could be outside occasionally at jobs sites, but I would imagine most of the time you would be in an office.

I met an environmental engineer who told me she picked her job because she wanted to be outside but found out that there is very little work outside. Needless to say she seemed a little bit disappointed with her job and said that if someone is really interested in helping the environment then they should work in the policy aspect. Also wildlife biologists and ecologists definitely work outside a lot. I worked with a few foresters over the summer and they spent about half their time outside. It is very nice and it is an important upcoming field I should say.

Hey, I am Andreas from Germany. I am currently 35 years old and I want to relearn math and physics. This is not one of these regular questions when it comes to this matter. So... I am very realistic about it. I know that there are severe contraints when it comes to selfstudy compared to a regular school and/or university (structure, peers, teachers, learning groups, tests, access to papers and so on) . I will never get a job in this field and I will never be taken serious by "real"...
