Is Physics or Applied Physics Better for Grad School in Astronomy/Astrophysics?

AI Thread Summary
When applying to graduate school for Astronomy or Astrophysics, the choice between a degree in Physics or Applied Physics can impact your application. A degree in Physics is generally preferred as it provides a strong foundational understanding of theoretical concepts essential for advanced studies. However, Applied Physics is also acceptable, particularly if the coursework aligns well with the requirements of the graduate program. Admissions committees focus on the depth and relevance of the material covered in your courses, emphasizing the importance of a solid background in core physics principles to prepare for specialized studies in Astronomy or Astrophysics.

But Applied Physics isn't terrible. Grad school applications are reviewed on the course level, so it will more come down to how well the material you covered prepares you for your intended studies.

TL;DR Summary: I want to do a PhD in applied math but I hate group theory, is this a big problem? Hello, I am a second-year math and physics double major with a minor in data science. I just finished group theory (today actually), and it was my least favorite class in all of university so far. It doesn't interest me, and I am also very bad at it compared to other math courses I have done. The other courses I have done are calculus I-III, ODEs, Linear Algebra, and Prob/Stats. Is it a...
