AI Thread Summary
Mu metal is noted for its high cost, with quotes received indicating prices of $50 for a 12x12 inch piece and $27 for a smaller 4x12 inch piece. The material, composed of 75-80% nickel, is perceived as overpriced, especially when compared to cheaper options on eBay that come with undesirable adhesive. Users are seeking recommendations for more affordable purchasing options. Magnetic Shield Corporation is mentioned as a potential supplier, though their prices may not be the lowest. It's important to ensure that mu metal is not mechanically stressed, as this can compromise its effectiveness.

It's so expensive!
I've received a few quotes.
1st quote was 12 inches wide by 12 inches long by .01 thick. 50$ I need 3 feet of that size. But wow that's expensive for a material that's 75-80% nickel.

2nd quote was 4 inches wide by 12 inches long by .01 thick. 27$ I would need 9 feet at that width.

I mean this is really over priced! On eBay they have some mu metal that's cheaper but it has a sticky adhesive on one side that I really don't want.

Does anyone know or have any experience purchasing mu metal? If so could you give me some info on where to get it for a reasonable price?

Thanks

I've been satisfied with Magnetic Shield Corporation:

I doubt that they are cheap, but I think their prices are competitive. Also, be careful where you buy your mu-metal shields. If they've been stressed mechanically, they lose much of their high-mu character. They need to be annealed at high temperature after any mechanical forming or manipulation.

Thanks for the info.
I will check them out.

comparing a flat solar panel of area 2π r² and a hemisphere of the same area, the hemispherical solar panel would only occupy the area π r² of while the flat panel would occupy an entire 2π r² of land. wouldn't the hemispherical version have the same area of panel exposed to the sun, occupy less land space and can therefore increase the number of panels one land can have fitted? this would increase the power output proportionally as well. when I searched it up I wasn't satisfied with...
