SUMMARY

The discussion centers on backing up and transferring data from a Mac to a new Mac, specifically using Time Machine and third-party applications. Users can transfer data, including installed applications, from an old Mac to a new one using Time Machine, but may face limitations with software installations without original DVDs. For transferring data to a PC, the issue often arises from incompatible file systems on USB flash drives. Solutions include formatting the USB drive to a compatible file system and using Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) for cloning hard drives.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of Time Machine backup processes
  • Familiarity with Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) software
  • Knowledge of file systems compatible with both Mac and PC
  • Experience with Target Disk Mode for data transfer
NEXT STEPS
  • Research how to format USB drives for cross-platform compatibility
  • Learn about using Time Machine for data migration to new Macs
  • Explore advanced features of Carbon Copy Cloner for effective backups
  • Investigate the implications of different file systems on data accessibility
USEFUL FOR

Mac users planning to upgrade their systems, IT professionals managing cross-platform data transfers, and anyone seeking efficient backup solutions for their applications and files.

Hello Forum,

I have asked several people and looked online as well on this topic. I have a mac and back all my information up using the Time Machine.

1) If I buy a new mac (new and different operating system) will I be able to transfer all the data and specifically the various computer programs that are installed on the new computer on the new computer using Time Machine? I don't have the old installation dvd for those softwares but I don't want to lose them.
If Time Machine cannot do that, I think there may be 3rd party applications that can do that.

2) I am often using external memory USB flash drives to store and transfer information. But if I saved the data on a mac and want to try to transfer it to a PC, the drive looks empty. why? Is there a way around this?

thanks,
