Mechanical / Control Engineer applying for Electrical roles?

AI Thread Summary
Graduating with a background in mechanical/control engineering and experience in PLC and Matlab programming opens opportunities in the automation sector, even for roles labeled as "Electrical." Applying for positions that require project management and PLC skills is advisable, as many mechanical engineers successfully transition into similar roles. Concerns about not holding an Electrical Engineering degree are often overstated; if you meet the job requirements, you should apply regardless. The hiring process may overlook degree specifics if your skills align with the job description. Ultimately, pursuing the application could lead to valuable opportunities in the control industry.

Hi,

I assume this forum is not only for help with engineering problems, but also a community of experienced industrial engineers of all areas.

I'm graduating this year, with a mixture of knowledge from mechanical / control engineering, some of this has consisted of PLC and Matlab programming. I'm looking at all types of jobs out there in the control industry, however I found one which is stated as "Electrical" but from what I'm reading its an automation company (which I specifically took a module in) and requires mainly project management and PLC programming, which I have experience in.

Do you think I should still apply even thought I won't actually obtain an "Electrical" Engineering degree?

Why wouldn't you apply? If you think you can fill the role that the company is looking for, then definitely apply. Plenty of mechanical engineers code ladder logic for PLCs.

If they are really stuck (and I doubt it) on whether or not your BS says EE or ME, they won't bring you in for an interview. Big whoop. It just means their HR department failed, and your resume didn't make it into the engineering managers hands.

I'm trying to decide what size and type of galvanized steel I need for 2 cantilever extensions. The cantilever is 5 ft. The space between the two cantilever arms is a 17 ft Gap the center 7 ft of the 17 ft Gap we'll need to Bear approximately 17,000 lb spread evenly from the front of the cantilever to the back of the cantilever over 5 ft. I will put support beams across these cantilever arms to support the load evenly
Thread 'Physics of Stretch: What pressure does a band apply on a cylinder?'
Scenario 1 (figure 1) A continuous loop of elastic material is stretched around two metal bars. The top bar is attached to a load cell that reads force. The lower bar can be moved downwards to stretch the elastic material. The lower bar is moved downwards until the two bars are 1190mm apart, stretching the elastic material. The bars are 5mm thick, so the total internal loop length is 1200mm (1190mm + 5mm + 5mm). At this level of stretch, the load cell reads 45N tensile force. Key numbers...
