    Calculation Mass
AI Thread Summary
The discussion revolves around calculating the moles of oxygen and nitrogen in 1 kg of air and determining their mole fractions. Users provide calculations indicating 14.5 moles of oxygen from 232 grams and approximately 54.8 moles of nitrogen from 768 grams. There is confusion about whether to sum these values for total moles and how to correctly calculate the molar masses of O2 and N2. The correct molar mass for molecular oxygen (O2) is 32 grams, while for nitrogen (N2) it is 28 grams. The thread emphasizes the importance of accurately understanding molecular weights in these calculations.

Homework Statement
Assuming that 1 kg of dry air consists of 232 g of oxygen and 768 g of nitrogen (ignore the admixture of other gases), calculate the molar mass of the air.
Relevant Equations
M = NA(avogadro number) x mo (molecular mass)
pdf file is my solooution l think its wrong

In the 1 kg of air, how many moles of oxygen are there? How many moles of nitrogen are there? What is the mole fraction of oxygen? Of nitrogen?

do l need to just add these together to get the result?

Wrong. How many atoms are there in molecular oxygen? In molecular nitrogen? What is the molar mass of an oxygen molecule? Of a nitrogen molecule?
