AI Thread Summary
In discussions about tracking a particle in chaotic motion, the terminology for the origin point of a coordinate system is debated. Suggestions include "conventional center," "relative center," "conditional center," and "imaginary center," with "reference point" emerging as a strong contender. The term "условного центра" is under scrutiny for its translation and appropriateness in this context. Participants express a preference for terms that accurately convey the concept without confusion. Ultimately, clarity in terminology is essential for effective communication in scientific discussions.

suppose you are tracking a particle in continuous chaotic motion (or just a random walk) and you select a point as the origin for a coordinate system. Would you refer to the point as the "conventional center", "relative center", "conditional center", "imaginary center", or what? (For Russian speakers : I am trying to translate the phrase "условного центра", although I do not know whether the author is using the standard Russian term either. A Russian speaker suggested "imaginary", but that does not sit well, to my mind.)

Perhaps "reference point" ?

Thanks, BvU. That's a pretty good option. Definitely better than mine.

comparing a flat solar panel of area 2π r² and a hemisphere of the same area, the hemispherical solar panel would only occupy the area π r² of while the flat panel would occupy an entire 2π r² of land. wouldn't the hemispherical version have the same area of panel exposed to the sun, occupy less land space and can therefore increase the number of panels one land can have fitted? this would increase the power output proportionally as well. when I searched it up I wasn't satisfied with...
