AI Thread Summary
The discussion focuses on solving two physics homework problems related to pressure, force, and density calculations for immersed objects. The first question involves calculating the pressure and force on a submerged cylinder and determining its loss of weight in water. The second question requires calculating the density of a metal cube and its apparent mass when immersed in a liquid. A participant initially expresses confusion about the formulas needed but later finds the necessary information in their notes. The conversation highlights the importance of understanding the principles of fluid mechanics and density in solving these types of problems.

Homework Statement

Q1.A cylinder of length 10cm and radius 4cm has its axis vertical and its top end 15cm below the surface of a large beaker of water.
Calculate:
a) the pressure on the upper and on the lower ends of the cylinder due to the water
b) the force on the upper and on the lower ends of the cylinder due to the water
c) hence state the loss in weigh of the cylinder when immersed in water.

Q2.A solid metal cube, each side 3cm long has a mass of 207.8grams.
Calculate:
a) the density of the metal kg m^-3
b)the apparent mass of the cube when immersed in a liquid of density 850kg m^-3

I am completely stumped about these 2 questions and have no idea how to obtain the formula. So if anyone can just post the formula for me would be great.

Hi LongFTW! Welcome to PF!

Pressure at depth h is ρgh, where ρ is density (of water).

That should enable you to do Q1 …

show us how far you get, and where you're stuck, and then we'll know how to help!

Never mind, I figured it out with some notes in my book, thanks for the help anyways.

TL;DR Summary: I came across this question from a Sri Lankan A-level textbook. Question - An ice cube with a length of 10 cm is immersed in water at 0 °C. An observer observes the ice cube from the water, and it seems to be 7.75 cm long. If the refractive index of water is 4/3, find the height of the ice cube immersed in the water. I could not understand how the apparent height of the ice cube in the water depends on the height of the ice cube immersed in the water. Does anyone have an...
Thread 'Variable mass system : water sprayed into a moving container'
Starting with the mass considerations #m(t)# is mass of water #M_{c}# mass of container and #M(t)# mass of total system $$M(t) = M_{C} + m(t)$$ $$\Rightarrow \frac{dM(t)}{dt} = \frac{dm(t)}{dt}$$ $$P_i = Mv + u \, dm$$ $$P_f = (M + dm)(v + dv)$$ $$\Delta P = M \, dv + (v - u) \, dm$$ $$F = \frac{dP}{dt} = M \frac{dv}{dt} + (v - u) \frac{dm}{dt}$$ $$F = u \frac{dm}{dt} = \rho A u^2$$ from conservation of momentum , the cannon recoils with the same force which it applies. $$\quad \frac{dm}{dt}...
