Quantum Theory vs. Relativity: Explained in Layman's Terms

AI Thread Summary
Quantum theory focuses on the behavior of subatomic particles, emphasizing probabilistic and discontinuous interactions, while relativity addresses the dynamics of large-scale objects, presenting a smooth and deterministic framework. Relativity is divided into special relativity, which explores the relationship between time and space, and general relativity, which deals with universal gravitation and kinetic motion. Both theories are essential in physics, providing models that describe different aspects of the universe rather than offering direct explanations. The consensus among physicists is that both theories are valuable, depending on the context of the phenomena being studied. Understanding these theories requires extensive reading, even at a layman's level, due to their complexity.

can someone tell me what to read in "layman " terms ,the main differences between quantum theory and relativity?

quantum theory explain the law of particle kinetic.
relativity is divide into restricted theory of relativity and general theory of relativity
.restricted theory of relativity mainly assume the relation of time and space.general theory of relativity mainly assume the relation of universal gravitation and object kinetic.

These are enormous subjects, and they have both glaring and subtle differences. It would take pages and pages of explanations, even at the layman level, to give this question a real answer.

If I had to sum it up in one sentence, I would say: Quantum theory describes the behavior of very small things, and is fundamentally discontinuous and probabilistic, while relativity describes the behavior of very large things, and is smooth and deterministic.

thanks a lot croot, can you tell which of them or both enjoy the consensus of physicists in explaining forces of physics that provides significant explanations of our world?

Both, depending on what you want to model.
And they don't provide explanations, only descriptions.

thanks mike, enlighten me with some explanations of physics, and not merely descriptions.

I think it's easist first to watch a short vidio clip I find these videos very relaxing to watch .. I got to thinking is this being done in the most efficient way? The sand has to be suspended in the water to move it to the outlet ... The faster the water , the more turbulance and the sand stays suspended, so it seems to me the rule of thumb is the hose be aimed towards the outlet at all times .. Many times the workers hit the sand directly which will greatly reduce the water...
