Receiving E-mails Not Addressed to Me

AI Thread Summary
Receiving emails not addressed to you is often a result of email spoofing, where the sender's address is forged to appear as if it comes from someone else. This technique is commonly used by scammers to send spam or phishing messages. In many cases, recipients may be "blind copied" on mass emails, where only the primary recipient's address is visible, while others remain hidden. This is a prevalent method in spam distribution, leading to the appearance of unsolicited emails in personal inboxes. The content of these emails is typically spammy or designed to entice clicks.

Quick question.

I just received an spam-type e-mail that says it was addressed to info@gmail.com, which is obviously not my e-mail. I'm pretty sure this isn't the only e-mail I've received which doesn't appear to have been addressed to me. Why would I be getting e-mails which don't appear to be addressed to me?

emails contain a lot of 'header' information which is not part of the message itself.
Much of that can be spoofed without affecting the transmission of the message.
Scammers also use this fact to make it appear that you received a message from somebody who didn't actually send it.

I see. Thanks rootone!

You've been "blind copied" on an email, probably along w/ thousands of others. Only the single "to" address shows up and it doesn't even have to be a real one. All of the BC's go through regardless. It's a common technique for spam.

In my discussions elsewhere, I've noticed a lot of disagreement regarding AI. A question that comes up is, "Is AI hype?" Unfortunately, when this question is asked, the one asking, as far as I can tell, may mean one of three things which can lead to lots of confusion. I'll list them out now for clarity. 1. Can AI do everything a human can do and how close are we to that? 2. Are corporations and governments using the promise of AI to gain more power for themselves? 3. Are AI and transhumans...
Thread 'ChatGPT Examples, Good and Bad'
I've been experimenting with ChatGPT. Some results are good, some very very bad. I think examples can help expose the properties of this AI. Maybe you can post some of your favorite examples and tell us what they reveal about the properties of this AI. (I had problems with copy/paste of text and formatting, so I'm posting my examples as screen shots. That is a promising start. But then I provided values V=1, R1=1, R2=2, R3=3 and asked for the value of I. At first, it said...
