Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around finding software capable of determining musical notes and their registers from .wav files. The focus includes recommendations for free software options, particularly for Linux users, and explores various tools and applications available for this purpose.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant requests recommendations for software that can identify musical notes from .wav files, specifically looking for free options compatible with Linux.
  • Another participant suggests several tuner apps and links to both Android and iOS applications that may fulfill the request.
  • A different participant mentions a website dedicated to piano tuning as a potential resource.
  • One participant recalls that Audacity has pitch/note detection features but notes that it may require significant effort to set up for specific sound files, suggesting it might not be the best first option.
  • Another approach mentioned involves using online music-to-note services, although the participant has not personally tried these services.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants provide various suggestions and resources, but there is no consensus on a single best solution or method. Multiple competing views on software options remain present.

Contextual Notes

Some suggestions depend on the user's willingness to experiment with technical details, and the effectiveness of the mentioned tools may vary based on specific use cases and sound file characteristics.

Hello everybody,
I have .wav musical files that reproduce the sound of certain notes. I am looking for a software that is able to determine the note and its register. Can any of you be able to recommend one, possibly free and for Linux?

Thank you very much!

In addition to what others have mentioned I seem to remember Audacity having several analysis tools and analysis plugins that had pitch/note detection on their "feature list", see for example this thread on the topic. I have never used Audacity for this purpose so I don't know if it has become easier since, but it will likely take some effort to get this approach working for your specific sound files so I wouldn't recommend you try this unless all else fails or you like tinkering with the all the juicy technical filtering details.

Another approach could be to try one of the many online music-to-note services (which I have never tried).
