Solving Mystery of Hacked Search Engines

AI Thread Summary
Users are experiencing unusual behavior with search engines like Google and Yahoo, noting discrepancies in search result counts and the absence of "www" in some URLs. Initially, Google was set as the homepage but began showing rounded-off result numbers, such as "50 of approximately 21,900,000." After switching to Yahoo, similar issues arose. Users have attempted troubleshooting by checking for malware, clearing cookies, and inspecting system files, but found no issues. Some participants suggest that the rounding of large numbers in search results is normal and that the absence of "www" in URLs typically does not indicate a problem. They also mention that vague searches often yield such results, and those using Linux are less likely to encounter adware-related issues.

Something strange is going on when I'm using search engines like google and yahoo.

At first my homepage was google, but it started to play up because it was coming up with elusive results. For one thing at the top when it shows found 50 of approximately 51,356, now the numbers are very round, e.g. showing 50 of approximately 21,900,000. I notice the sites found do not have the www. starter but are of the type http://sitename.com

I since changed my homepage to yahoo which was working fine, but now that is doing the same thing.

I can't find any dodgy files in the usual folder, ad-aware finds nothing, can't find anything unordinary in the registry or in the running processes. I've cleared my cookies and temporary files, etc.

Anyone got any ideas, where this ones lurking?

I don't see any of that as a problem. For big numbers, they round off the totals. You're never going to search 200 million results by hand. (If you do, seek help immediately, the psychiatric kind). So the DNS is leaving off the www. Mostly does not matter(i can't think of a reason it would, but I'm sure there is some instance that it might). Sites like slashdot won't have it for me, others will. Hasn't caused any problems. All that you described occurrs when i do a vague search (many hits, and some sites not having www.). Being that I'm on Linux, I highly doubt its anything like adware or anything like that.

In my discussions elsewhere, I've noticed a lot of disagreement regarding AI. A question that comes up is, "Is AI hype?" Unfortunately, when this question is asked, the one asking, as far as I can tell, may mean one of three things which can lead to lots of confusion. I'll list them out now for clarity. 1. Can AI do everything a human can do and how close are we to that? 2. Are corporations and governments using the promise of AI to gain more power for themselves? 3. Are AI and transhumans...
Thread 'ChatGPT Examples, Good and Bad'
I've been experimenting with ChatGPT. Some results are good, some very very bad. I think examples can help expose the properties of this AI. Maybe you can post some of your favorite examples and tell us what they reveal about the properties of this AI. (I had problems with copy/paste of text and formatting, so I'm posting my examples as screen shots. That is a promising start. But then I provided values V=1, R1=1, R2=2, R3=3 and asked for the value of I. At first, it said...
