The Rutherford Experiment?

AI Thread Summary
The Rutherford Experiment involved firing alpha particles at a thin gold foil and observing their deflection. This experiment challenged the Plum Pudding Model, which suggested that positive charge was evenly distributed throughout the atom. According to the Plum Pudding Model, only minor deviations of alpha particles were expected due to low charge density. However, the Rutherford Experiment revealed significant deflections, indicating the presence of a small, dense, positively charged nucleus at the center of the atom. This finding was pivotal in reshaping atomic theory by introducing the concept of the nucleus, contrasting sharply with the earlier Plum Pudding Model. The discussion also included some off-topic banter among participants, but the core focus remained on the scientific principles of the Rutherford Experiment and its implications for atomic structure.

[SOLVED] The Rutherford Experiment?

hello jimmy! you are my hero! i love physics, i was wondering if you could explain the Rutherford Experiment in great detail, as i have been unable to understand it. Can you also link it with the Plum Pudding Experiment, and how they differ?
thanks, your dedicated fan and admirer nige

The Rutherford experiment consisted of firing alpha particles at a thin sheet of gold foil in a vacuum, and detecting them as they exit. By the plum pudding model, the postive charge is spread out over the entire volume of the atom, and the alpha particles, being postively charged, would be deviated by this charge. In the plum pudding model, due to the low charge density, only very small deviations can be expected.

On carrying out the experiment, it was found that there were a number of particles deviated by very large angles. This led to the conclusion that there existed a highly charged, very massive yet small entity in the atom - the nucleus.

jimmy who? there are about 20 jimmys on PF now!
