AI Thread Summary
Oxyacetylene welding can effectively join mild steel up to about 3/16" thick in a butt joint. Beveling the edges of the joint can extend this limit, depending on the welder's skill and patience. Using a larger torch and filler rod can expedite the welding process. There are no strict limits for larger projects, as it largely depends on the welder's capabilities. Understanding these factors is crucial for successful welding assignments.

Well, it depends. If you are welding plate mild steel with a butt joint the practical limit is about 3/16" thick. If you bevel the edges of the joint the limit is your patience. A larger torch and fill rod will make the work go faster but there is not a limit "as a rule". I hope this helps.
