News Was Bush's Mission in Iraq Really About Oil?

  • Thread starter Thread starter fourier jr

AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on the assertion that the Iraq War, initiated under President George W. Bush, was fundamentally about oil rather than the publicly stated goals of liberation and freedom. Greg Palast argues that the Bush administration's true objective was to control Iraq's oil production and maintain its alignment with OPEC, thereby limiting output to stabilize oil prices. This claim is supported by references to a secret State Department plan that directed Iraq to enhance its relationship with OPEC. Critics of Palast challenge his credibility, questioning the accuracy of his statements and labeling him a fraud. The conversation also touches on the financial gains of Bush's relatives from war-related contracts, suggesting a deeper connection between political decisions and personal profit. Overall, the thread reflects a contentious debate over the motives behind the Iraq invasion and the integrity of those discussing it.

Bush Didn't Bungle Iraq, You Fools
THE MISSION WAS INDEED ACCCOMPLISHED

by Greg Palast

Get off it. All the carping, belly-aching and complaining about George Bush's incompetence in Iraq, from both the Left and now the Right, is just dead wrong.

On the third anniversary of the tanks rolling over Iraq's border, most of the 59 million Homer Simpsons who voted for Bush are beginning to doubt if his mission was accomplished.

But don't kid yourself -- Bush and his co-conspirator, Dick Cheney, accomplished exactly what they set out to do. In case you've forgotten what their real mission was, let me remind you of White House spokesman Ari Fleisher's original announcement, three years ago, launching of what he called,

"Operation

Iraqi

Liberation."

O.I.L. How droll of them, how cute. Then, Karl Rove made the giggling boys in the White House change it to "OIF" -- Operation Iraqi Freedom. But the 101st Airborne wasn't sent to Basra to get its hands on Iraq's OIF.

"It's about oil," Robert Ebel told me. Who is Ebel? Formerly the CIA's top oil analyst, he was sent by the Pentagon, about a month before the invasion, to a secret confab in London with Saddam's former oil minister to finalize the plans for "liberating" Iraq's oil industry. In London, Bush's emissary Ebel also instructed Ibrahim Bahr al-Ulum, the man the Pentagon would choose as post-OIF oil minister for Iraq, on the correct method of disposing Iraq's crude.

And what did the USA want Iraq to do with Iraq's oil? The answer will surprise many of you: and it is uglier, more twisted, devilish and devious than anything imagined by the most conspiracy-addicted blogger. The answer can be found in a 323-page plan for Iraq's oil secretly drafted by the State Department. Our team got a hold of a copy; how, doesn't matter. The key thing is what's inside this thick Bush diktat: a directive to Iraqis to maintain a state oil company that will "enhance its relationship with OPEC."

Enhance its relationship with OPEC? How strange: the government of the United States ordering Iraq to support the very OPEC oil cartel which is strangling our nation with outrageously high prices for crude.

Specifically, the system ordered up by the Bush cabal would keep a lid on Iraq's oil production -- limiting Iraq's oil pumping to the tight quota set by Saudi Arabia and the OPEC cartel.

There you have it. Yes, Bush went in for the oil -- not to get more of Iraq's oil, but to prevent Iraq producing too much of it.

etc etc

so it looks like attacking & taking over Iraq was about oil after all  as dick cheney would say, all you doubters can go f*** yourselves.

I would be great to see a copy of those documents :-p

I will certainly be very interested to see if Bush and Cheney become directors of an oil services or an export/import company which has lucrative contracts in Iraq. But I will not be surprised.

That is not nesesary, they can place a friend or a relative. It's a common practice found in corrupt politicians.

Cute, indeed. Could someone remind me why Palast can't get a job even for a liberal media outlet in the US? I seem to have forgotten...

edit: Oh wait, I remember now: Greg Palast was driven out of American media because he is a liar. A fraud. A traitor. That "quote" - "Operation Iraqi Liberation" - where exactly did that come from...? I'd like to see a government source that uses that phrase. Oh, right - it was actually called "Operation Iraqi Freedom" - but frauds like Palast changed it for their own fraudulent purposes.

I'll never understand why Palast isn't sharing a jail cell with Jane Fonda. Both are guilty of treason.

Hey, at least he's making a falsifiable claim. If Iraq's oil industry is not nationalized and does not produce at or under the OPEC cap, then he either lied or had false information.

WASHINGTON — As President Bush embarks on a new effort to shore up public support for the war in Iraq, an uncle of the commander in chief is collecting $2.7 million in cash and stock from the recent sale of a company that profited from the war.

i'm not sure; you'd have to ask him. i suspect that none of the "liberal" media outlets in the US would touch this story. i think palast wrote that in his book "the best democracy money can buy". careerism & obedience to the govt is what the media in the US is all about.

again, you can email him & ask him where he found that out. i don't know how he's a liar/fraud since he can back up everything he says. example: that station dan rather worked for (cbs?)

I'll never understand why Palast isn't sharing a jail cell with Jane Fonda. Both are guilty of treason.
 is it treason to speak the truth & to expose lies?
