Specializing in Electrical Engineering: Pros & Cons

AI Thread Summary
Specializing in electrical engineering can enhance job prospects in specific fields, but a general education may offer broader employment opportunities. Many participants suggest that maintaining a general focus allows for flexibility and adaptability in the job market. Those who have taken a general approach report satisfaction with their decision, as it provides a wider subject background. Specialization can occur later in one's career, often through on-the-job training. Ultimately, the choice between specializing or remaining general should align with individual career goals and interests.

Hi! I am an electrical engineering undergraduate going into my 3rd yr of my university education. Currently thinking of whether to specialise or not. Any suggestions on why I should or shouldn't? Thanks!

Well are you interested in the choices you have for specialisation? Are you concerned about employment prospects? Are you planning on continuing your studies after you get your degree?

employment prospects will be my primarily concern after graduation

Well if you want employment in a specialist field, then you might want to consider a more specialised education... otherwise keeping your education general will keep your employment opportunities open, and there's always room to specialise.

I too would recommend the general approach. I did that in civil and am glad I did. You will get your specialised education once you start working. You will have a wider subject background which gives you more options in employment.

Hi all, i have some questions about the tesla turbine: is a tesla turbine more efficient than a steam engine or a stirling engine ? about the discs of the tesla turbine warping because of the high speed rotations; does running the engine on a lower speed solve that or will the discs warp anyway after time ? what is the difference in efficiency between the tesla turbine running at high speed and running it at a lower speed ( as fast as possible but low enough to not warp de discs) and: i...
