What is the Sarcos Exoskeleton and How Can It Revolutionize Protection?

AI Thread Summary
The discussion revolves around the need for protective gear for a member named Evo, who seems to be prone to accidents. Suggestions include high-tech solutions like a combination of Gundam-style armor with Kevlar and air cushioning, and humorous ideas like a human-sized hamster ball for safety. Participants propose various protective clothing options, such as racing leathers with Kevlar, while also considering mobility issues and the practicality of such gear. The conversation takes a light-hearted turn with discussions about stylish yet protective footwear and the potential for a GPS-enabled shock belt to keep Evo safe from hazards. There are also serious undertones, as members express concern for Evo's health and urge her to seek medical attention for ongoing pain and numbness. The thread balances humor with genuine care, showcasing a community dynamic focused on support and creativity in problem-solving.

I did think about high guard armour, but that is not invented yet, any other full body protection is rather cumbersome, so what are the options.

What the hell is this about?

Wolram, you are such an angel!

Ok, anyone that posts here that doesn't understand gets banned for 10 days!

I propose a guard dog, a female retriever...

Something like Gundam armor with a Kevlar inner layer with air cushioning and thermal control.

Bladibla gets 10 "getting out of banning free" cards. A smart member.

She just needs a good man to boss around and do things for her. Then she can post about how he got hurt.

I could suggest something if I knew what this was about. I do enjoy your thoughful and kind remarks Evo, so I don't want anything bad to happen to you.

I'd say a good doctor to repair everything 'right' (forever) and two months paid vacation someplace where there is zero stress

two months?---I meant six

How is JAWS OF DEATH doing by the way?

 That certainly would be the best idea. Otherwise, I think we'll hire an interior decorator for her who specializes in padded wallpaper.

Probably the best protection would be to bronze her and put her on the mantle.

Oh, never mind; she'd just fall off and hit her head on a log.[/size]

I was thinking of a belt fitted with GPS and satellite surveillance, combine the two and any time Evo is near any thing dangerous the belt will give her a little electric shock.

It'd have to be damned accurate sat nav other wise she's going to get shocked within 6 feet of anything.

Some 1 piece racing leathers would be good since they'd help set Evo's arm and movement would be slow with the protection of some kevlar body armour over strategic places. Going to the toilet is an issue though.

Getting dates might be a problem unless we throw in some matching stilettos and find someone with a penchant for body armor.

Then again... it could add to her mystique.

Oh, there's probably someone out there into that...there's someone into pretty much anything you can imagine (and some things you wish you hadn't imagined).

But, we might run into the trouble of her not being able to run out of the way of the boulder that suddenly falls from nowhere if her mobility is reduced, and Wollie's shock suit is likely to electrocute her. C'mon guys, you have to think harder...this is Evo who can damage herself in the most unlikely and unexpected ways!

Who needs stilettos when you can have these:

Ooh, those look nice and safe. :approve: Do the heels light up so oncoming cars can see her at night? I think we need to add retractable cleats to the bottoms of the shoes too, so she has enough traction to avoid sliding into the icy ravine, but can retract them to avoid puncturing herself with them any other time.

Oh my, I went to sleep in my flannel cat and dog PJ's and I wake up in full body armor and bubble wrapped with a GPS cattle prod. :bugeye:

kurdt, love the boots, but Moonbear is right, we need to add retractable tungsten cleats, or I can just slip my ice cleats over them! I do have a full line of klutz accessories.

The boots are surprisingly grippy. Since they're race spec the sole is designed to grip even with oils present. You don't want to fall over before you get to your bike. If you encounter some ice or snow then the cleats might be handy.

Much better than mitigating the consequences of those mishaps is preventing them. You need a guardian angel.

Jesus webster, what is that white thing? Its going to give me nightmares, LOL. I suggest one of those Kiwi things, I think they're called Zorbs. Its basically an inflated clear plastic hamster ball for humans.

We should pool our money and buy Evo a human-sized hamster ball that is too big to fit out the back door so she can't roll into the ditch of darn (oops! the Chasm of Doom...)

Yeah, they're pretty cool,(and soft so you can't get hurt ;) ), plus if she ever did go outside it'd be FUN! Oh, and they float so things like rivers, lakes, ponds, even frozen bodies of water are a POC (piece of cake)

Here's some prices for zorbs and zorb parts. These might be Kiwi dollars in the price area though. Sorry to make it so long, but hey we want to find the best protection to price ratio.

I'm going with the Hamster ball idea. With a few holes placed just right, she can still roll herself over to the PC and visit with us.

  • #30
Zorbs sound ok, do they come with safety belts and anti collision lights?

  • #31
Or, hypatia, if its the model where you get strapped in, we can just put her comp in there too.

We've got to be able to get food in and (some less-attractive stuff out), so we need some holes and a way to exploit them. Not too enticing to use the food-in holes for the "other" holes.

  • #33
The standard "Zorb" has two holes on opposite sides, so were set!

Sharp pointy things can get through holes, the zorb would have to be double skined with offsets of the holes from inner to outer skin.

Oh, and how is Evo going to do her chores?

Evo claims to have cooked for years, so she ought be able to deal with sharp pointy things on some level. If she still has the requisite number of fingers, we must admit to SOME level of competence (or luck).

Now, that sounds like just the thing!

I think we just need to find a way to mount a wireless keyboard inside, because we wouldn't want her to have to stick her hands out to type lest the same fate befall her as we were all threatened would happen if we stuck our hands out the car window as kids.

I already suggested that we just put the comp in with her.

Some sort of in-house force field with variable settings that allow her function, but nothing sharp, heavy or insect-like can invade it.

A re-enforced Zorb would allow her access to the outside world. If we could figure out how to stabilize it and add an engine/navigation/tracking device it could protect her during travel. She'd be able to go cross country and stay off the highway.

I like the bubble wrap, too. When she gets antsy she could work off the frustration. "pop-pop-pop-pop".

All the more disturbing. High-heeled stripper elves carrying Evo off in her bubble.

Yep, back on track before the dwarfs show up.

Reading all of the caring, loving suggestions here are cheering me up. Unfortunately, I think this is one time the problem isn't just going to go away. I hate taking pain pills, but I'm breaking down and taking at least one a day just so I can move around a bit for minimum survival like food.

And have you seen the doctor yet? You're good at making sure everyone else here sees a doctor when they need one, and now it's time for you to see one and are being stubborn about it, aren't you? The longer you wait, the more likely it is the damage will be permanent. Do you want to be in this sort of pain the rest of your life? Or worse, lose all sensation to your fingers? If you think you have an uncanny attraction for klutzy accidents now, wait until you can't feel your fingers...get to a doctor!

I went to the doctor Friday, I thought he'd at least x-ray my back and shoulder, but he says I need to go back to the orthopedic surgeon. Also my health insurance provider changed yesterday and I need my new insurance card. I'm hoping to get into see him early next week.

And you're right, I hate going to doctors.
