AI Thread Summary
The discussion focuses on identifying various energy transfers in a series of biological and industrial processes. Participants clarify that energy transfers should be expressed as transitions from one form to another, such as light energy to chemical energy. The original poster seeks confirmation on specific energy transformations, particularly regarding coal to factory and factory to power lines. There is uncertainty about the energy types involved in the transitions from rubber tree to factory and factory to ball manufacturing. Overall, the conversation emphasizes the importance of accurately defining energy transformations in different contexts.

Homework Statement

Sun to plant
Worm eating a plant
Bird eating a worm
Human eating a bird
Human throwing a ball up in the air
Plant to coal
Coal to a factory
Factory to power lines
Power lines to computer
Sun to Rubber tree
Rubber tree to factory
Factory to ball (manufacture)

The Attempt at a Solution

Sun to plant - light energy
Worm eating a plant - chemical energy
Bird eating a worm - chemical energy
Human eating a bird - chemical energy
Human throwing a ball up in the air
Plant to coal - chemical energy
Coal to a factory
Factory to power lines
Power lines to computer - electric energy
Sun to Rubber tree - light energy
Rubber tree to factory
Factory to ball (manufacture)

Correct me if I'm wrong on these.

Looks like you have the right idea, but a transfer involves going from one form of energy to the next, so I think you should rephrase your answers in the form of: (starting energy) to (ending energy).

For example, the first one would sound better as: light energy to chemical energy

Oh, thanks. Do you know if the ones i have so far are right? I think these two are chemical, but i may be wrong

Coal to a factory
Factory to power lines

I have no clue about these two

Rubber tree to factory
Factory to ball (manufacture)

What kind of energy is it when

Human to a ball
Coal to a factory
Factory to power lines
Rubber tree to factory
Factory to ball (manufacture)

With kinds of energy transformations is one familiar?

Thread 'Variable mass system : water sprayed into a moving container'
Starting with the mass considerations #m(t)# is mass of water #M_{c}# mass of container and #M(t)# mass of total system $$M(t) = M_{C} + m(t)$$ $$\Rightarrow \frac{dM(t)}{dt} = \frac{dm(t)}{dt}$$ $$P_i = Mv + u \, dm$$ $$P_f = (M + dm)(v + dv)$$ $$\Delta P = M \, dv + (v - u) \, dm$$ $$F = \frac{dP}{dt} = M \frac{dv}{dt} + (v - u) \frac{dm}{dt}$$ $$F = u \frac{dm}{dt} = \rho A u^2$$ from conservation of momentum , the cannon recoils with the same force which it applies. $$\quad \frac{dm}{dt}...
