Wind Power Generator: Small & Cheap Alternator Suggestions

AI Thread Summary
For building a vertical wind-powered turbine system, suggestions for small, affordable generators include using 12-volt DC motors from vehicles, such as those for windshield wipers or windows, which can function as generators in reverse. It's important to consider that most vertical axis windmills operate at high torque and low speed, requiring proper gearing to achieve higher RPMs for effective energy generation. Homemade generators using Volvo wheel hubs and custom-wound coils are also recommended for those looking for a DIY approach. The target specifications for the generator are under one foot in diameter and priced below $50, with a power output of 1 kW or less for optimal performance at airspeeds under 15 mph. Overall, careful selection and modification of components are crucial for building an efficient wind turbine system.

Hi,

I'm trying to build a vertical wind powered turbine system and I'm have trouble finding a small, cheap generator/alternator to use. Does anyone have any suggestions?

If you want to build something that works - rather than a science fair project check out these http://www.otherpower.com/
They discuss why you should make your own generator from Volvo wheel hubs and wind your own coils!

I'm not sure if this is too small, but any 12 volt DC motor from a car should work in reverse as a DC generator. These might be the motors that run the windshield wipers or those that operate the windows. The good thing about them is that they're already perfect for charging a 12 volt battery.

I have one I picked up at a swap meet. It has a large speed reduction through a worm gear. To use it as a generator that worm gear would have to be removed and some other means of gearing it up arrived at.

Most vertical axis wind mills are high torque/low speed and you need to arrange your gears or pulleys such that the generator is running at much higher RPMs than the windmill rotor. The slower the rotor, the more torque the wind applies to it.

Define "small" and "cheap".

What power level 1 kW, 10 kW, . . .?

Small, as in under a foot diameter, cheap as in less than $50 dollars.

1kW or less. nothing extravagant. Its for a small wind turbine to be used for airspeeds of less than 15mph.

Thanks!

Hi all, I have a question. So from the derivation of the Isentropic process relationship PV^gamma = constant, there is a step dW = PdV, which can only be said for quasi-equilibrium (or reversible) processes. As such I believe PV^gamma = constant (and the family of equations) should not be applicable to just adiabatic processes? Ie, it should be applicable only for adiabatic + reversible = isentropic processes? However, I've seen couple of online notes/books, and...
I have an engine that uses a dry sump oiling system. The oil collection pan has three AN fittings to use for scavenging. Two of the fittings are approximately on the same level, the third is about 1/2 to 3/4 inch higher than the other two. The system ran for years with no problem using a three stage pump (one pressure and two scavenge stages). The two scavenge stages were connected at times to any two of the three AN fittings on the tank. Recently I tried an upgrade to a four stage pump...
