Solve Annuity Word Problem: Debt of $82423.55
Homework Statement A business is paying off a debt by paying an installment of $8000 at the end of each year. Interest is being charged at 5.5%. What is the outstanding debt if the business has just paid an installment and there remain 15 further installments of $8000 and a final repayment of...- jackscholar

Triple integral problem: cylindrical coordinates
I am trying to determine the volume for Torricelli's Trumpet. I've done it the conventional way but have been want to prove it using the triple integral method. I stumbled across a website which stated a few things and got to the answer but it didn't explain how. I have proved the surface area...- jackscholar

Triple integral problem: cylindrical coordinates
Homework Statement I have a graph 1/x^2=y^2+z^2 where z=rsin(θ) and y=rcos(θ) where 0≤r≤1 and 0≤θ≤2∏ on the zy-plane The end result is attached (sorry, I'm not aware of how to use Latex :[ ) I can kind of understand how they determined the first bounds for the integral: the lowest x...- jackscholar

Vector calculus, Torricelli's Trumpet/Gabriel's Horn
Homework Statement I've recently been completing an assessment on Torricelli's Trumpet and was told to look into the geometry aspect. I've been following this website: http://www.palmbeachstate.edu/honors/documents/jeansergejoseph.pdf I understand all the steps but am not privvy to how they...- jackscholar

Equation of ellipse: complex plane
That is what I wrote in regards to Simon Bridge. To uniquely specify a conic section you need five points, don't you? How do I determine the distances between those two points? The constant is equal to the major axis length, isn't it. In determining the major axis length I would be able to...- jackscholar

Equation of ellipse: complex plane
Well, in my textbook the examples always say "describe the locus of z(x,y) given that... and there will be an example such as the |z-2i|+|z+1|=4 the problem with what I've done is that it doesn't have an axis length and I don't know if I need one or how to find one.- jackscholar

Equation of ellipse: complex plane
Homework Statement The question simply states that the focals are (0,2) and (2,-1) and I need to form an equation from it. I know that in complex form this would be |z-(0-2i)| + |z-(-2+i)| or more simply |z+2i|+|z+2-i|. Is this right?- jackscholar

Rates of change: inflated hot-air balloon
Homework Statement An inflated hot air balloon can be considered as a perfect sphere woth diameter of 30m. When the hatch is opened, the hot air is lost at a rate of 118m^3/s. For the first 5 seconds, the balloon maintains its spherical shape, but then it begins to collapse. At what rate is...- jackscholar

Normal and binomial distribution: using Z-scores to find answer
The prices for bananes that a fruit shop would have to pay to keep them in stock have a mean of $1.35/kg and a standard deviation of 18 cents. The owner will not pay more than a certain price, but manages to keep stock 8% of the time. What is the maximum price the ownwer will pay? I found...- jackscholar

Optimization: maximum curved surface area of a cylinder in sphere
So it then becomes 64∏sin(2θ). After that it is differentiated to become 128∏cos(2θ)=0. Therefore once re-arranged it becomes cos(2θ)=0, then apply the inverse of cos to both sides and divide by two...this gives ∏/4? Does this also apply to 3∏/4, 5∏/4, 7∏/4...(2n-1)∏/4 or something like that?- jackscholar
