Undergrad What are the considerations for analyzing current through thin gold wires?
Thanks for replying, but what do you mean that gold doesn't change on heating? Do you mean its conduction? And does such a property remain unchanged for only low-temperature differences, or for even high temperatures?- Joshua L

Undergrad What are the considerations for analyzing current through thin gold wires?
Hey all, I've been thinking of a couple scenarios that involve thin wires (ones that have their diameter in the order of 1 mm). Suppose a gold wire with length L and diameter D is suspended straight in room temperature air and connected to some voltage V. Thus, a current will pass through the...- Joshua L

High School What is the Hamiltonian operator for a decaying Carbon-14 atom?
Yes, it's beta decay. But, unfortunately, I haven't taken any quantum mechanics courses yet. I know the concept and some general examples of the Hamiltonian, but I do not know what "take H(i to f)" means.- Joshua L

Is Brown good for string theory?
I looked at Brown University and here's what I've found. Brown's Physics department currently employs (from what I've found) at least five theoretical particle physicists (their research includes string theory). Compare this number to MIT's and Princeton's thirteen. Now, only seven paper's from...- Joshua L

Can I Become a Cosmologist Without Being Good at Physics?
You got to love it too. To me, it is the biggest prerequisite. It seems you love cosmology, which a step in the right direction.- Joshua L

Should I Study Physics? - A Question About Random Facts
It's all about perspective. I don't find these thing to be random; they are what they are. You may find these physical traits to be random and unrelated, but physicists try to make sense of these facts and relate them. For example, the permeability of free space ( the μ0 constant within the...- Joshua L

Schools Best Physics Graduate Schools for QFT, GR, and HEP?
Hey guys, just curious of your opinions on this matter. Which graduate schools are the best to earn a Ph.D. in physics theory from and research in concerning the theoretical sub-fields Quantum Field Theory, General Relativity, and Elementary Particle Physics (maybe String Theory)? Which has...- Joshua L

What specific field in physics would best fit me? programs?
Hello, I am currently a sophomore double majoring in Physics and Math at Purdue University. I have a 4.0 overall GPA and would love to earn a Ph.D. and probably a postdoc position in the future. But what should I concentrate in? To which graduate program should I set my eyes on? Here are...- Joshua L

Triple Product of Vectors: Coplanar or Collinear? Understanding the Result
Here's a helpful hint that may help you. The determinant $$\begin{vmatrix} 1&5&-2 \\ 3&-1&0 \\ 5&9&-4 \end{vmatrix} = \begin{vmatrix} u_x&u_y&u_z \\ v_x&v_y&v_z \\ w_x&w_y&w_z \end{vmatrix}$$ may be rewritten as $$\begin{vmatrix} u_x&u_y&u_z \\ v_x&v_y&v_z \\ w_x&w_y&w_z \end{vmatrix} =...- Joshua L
