AI Thread Summary
To calculate the work done by the crane in lifting soil, the mass of the soil must first be determined using its volume and density, resulting in a mass of 2.3 x 10^3 kg. The total weight of the soil can be calculated by multiplying this mass by the acceleration due to gravity (9.81 m/s²), and the weight of the bucket is given as 2.25 x 10^3 N. The total force (weight) to be lifted is the sum of the weight of the soil and the bucket. Finally, the work done can be calculated using the equation W = Fd, where F is the total weight and d is the height of 7.50 m.

Homework Statement

A crane lifts a 2.25x10^3 bucket containing 1.15m^3 of soil (density = 2.00x10^3kg/m^3) to a height of 7.50 m. Calculate the work the crane performs.

Homework Equations

D=m/V
W=Fd

The Attempt at a Solution

F=2n25x10^3N
d=7.50m
D=2.00x10^3 kg/m^3
V=1.15m^3
W=?

alright so I've calculated the mass the object will have and i got 2.3 x 10^3kg
Now i was just wondering if anyone could help me on where to go from here?

find the weight of the soil, add it on to the weight of the bucket and use your W=Fd equation.

how do i find the weight of the soil and the weight of the bucket?

weight=mass*g

g=acceleration due to gravity=9.81

you already know the weight of the bucket is 2.25*103 N.

Is it N or kg? You didnt specify and its very important

is what in N or kg? everything is there

Kindly see the attached pdf. My attempt to solve it, is in it. I'm wondering if my solution is right. My idea is this: At any point of time, the ball may be assumed to be at an incline which is at an angle of θ(kindly see both the pics in the pdf file). The value of θ will continuously change and so will the value of friction. I'm not able to figure out, why my solution is wrong, if it is wrong .
TL;DR Summary: I came across this question from a Sri Lankan A-level textbook. Question - An ice cube with a length of 10 cm is immersed in water at 0 °C. An observer observes the ice cube from the water, and it seems to be 7.75 cm long. If the refractive index of water is 4/3, find the height of the ice cube immersed in the water. I could not understand how the apparent height of the ice cube in the water depends on the height of the ice cube immersed in the water. Does anyone have an...
