Stargazing City viewing with dobsonian telescope?

AI Thread Summary
Using a Dobsonian telescope in a city with light pollution can still yield impressive views, particularly of the Moon and planets like Jupiter. While some bright deep sky objects may be visible, they are likely to appear underwhelming due to the surrounding light. For enhanced viewing experiences, resources like "Sky and Telescope" offer valuable tips and guides. Their website includes a section on "This week's sky at a glance," which can help users plan their observations. Overall, city dwellers can still enjoy astronomy, but expectations should be managed due to light interference.

My father will be lending me his dobsonian telescope, but I live in the city. Is there much to see through all this light pollution?

The Moon and multiple planets. Jupiter is still impressive at this time of year. You might be able to see a few of the very bright deep sky objects, but they will be very underwhelming.

Let's take a step back - it is trivial to see the sun in radio. An old analog TV, a set of "rabbit ears" antenna, and you're good to go. Point the antenna at the sun (i.e. the ears are perpendicular to it) and there is...
