Absolute Magnitudes for Cepheids

AI Thread Summary
The discussion focuses on calculating absolute magnitudes for Cepheid variables using the equation Mv = - [2.76 log10(P) – 1.0)] – 4.16. A user is struggling to input the calculation correctly into their scientific calculator, leading to inconsistent results. They provide a specific value for P (50.0) and mention an initial result of -9.34, suspecting they may have omitted the negative sign. Other participants ask for clarification on the value of P and the user's intermediate calculations to identify potential errors. The conversation emphasizes the importance of accurate input and understanding the equation's components for correct results.

Would somebody help me in entering a calculation into my scientific calculator?
The equation is Mv = - [2.76 log10(P) – 1.0)] – 4.16
I have the value of P but I'm not sure how to enter this into the calculator. I get a different answer every time.
Thanks,

Can you tell us what P is, and some of the answers you are getting? Maybe we can spot what you're doing wrong. What did you get for the 2.76logP part?

I'm solving for absolute magnitudes for Cepheids. For my first Cepheid P is 50.0 and my first response was -9.34 but I think I forgot to enter the negative sign at the beginning of the equation.
thank you.

Is a homemade radio telescope realistic? There seems to be a confluence of multiple technologies that makes the situation better than when I was a wee lad: software-defined radio (SDR), the easy availability of satellite dishes, surveillance drives, and fast CPUs. Let's take a step back - it is trivial to see the sun in radio. An old analog TV, a set of "rabbit ears" antenna, and you're good to go. Point the antenna at the sun (i.e. the ears are perpendicular to it) and there is...
