AI Thread Summary
The discussion revolves around a user struggling with five physics problems related to motion and forces. The problems include calculating the current of a river based on motorboat speeds, determining the resultant velocity of a plane encountering wind, finding total displacement for a flight path, and breaking down force components for shoveling snow and pulling a sled. Forum members emphasize the importance of showing attempts at solving the problems and relevant equations to receive effective help. The thread has been moved to the Homework Help forums for more focused assistance.

i have been on these last few problems since thursday of last week and I am still lost can someone help me with one through 5

1.Shareen finds that when she drives her motorboat upstream she can travel with a speed of only 8 m/s, while she moves with a speed of 12 m/s when she heads downstream. what is the current of the river on which shareen is traveling?

2. Rochelle is flying to new york for her big broadway debut. If the plane heads out of Los Angeles with a velocity of 220. m/s in a northeast direction, relative to the ground, and encounters a wind blowing head on at 45 m/s, what is the resultant velocity of the plane, relative to the ground?

3. Amit flies due east from san francisco to washington to boston a displacement of 5600. km. He then flies from washingiton to boston, s displacement of 900. km at an angle of 55.0 degrees east of north. what is amit's total displacement?

4. Marcie shovels snow after storm by excercisong a force of 30.0 N on her shovel at an angle of 60.0 degrees to the vertical. what are the horizontal and vertical components of the force exerted by marcie?

5. Ivan pulls a sled loaded with logs to his cabin in the woods. If Ivan pulls with a force of 800. N in direction 20.0 degrees above the horizontal, what are the horizontal and vertical components of the force exerted by Ivan?

Welcome to the PF. You must show us your attempts at the solutions for these problems before we can offer tutorial assistance. You should also show us the relevant equations involved in your questions.

Please post your work on a couple of the questions, so that we can be of assistance.

Kindly see the attached pdf. My attempt to solve it, is in it. I'm wondering if my solution is right. My idea is this: At any point of time, the ball may be assumed to be at an incline which is at an angle of θ(kindly see both the pics in the pdf file). The value of θ will continuously change and so will the value of friction. I'm not able to figure out, why my solution is wrong, if it is wrong .
TL;DR Summary: I came across this question from a Sri Lankan A-level textbook. Question - An ice cube with a length of 10 cm is immersed in water at 0 °C. An observer observes the ice cube from the water, and it seems to be 7.75 cm long. If the refractive index of water is 4/3, find the height of the ice cube immersed in the water. I could not understand how the apparent height of the ice cube in the water depends on the height of the ice cube immersed in the water. Does anyone have an...
