Linear Model topic:
Given that we have a crossed fixed model w/o interaction, how would I go about testing for the main effects using extra (seq) sum of squares?
I know I am supposed to somehow use the F test and get the non centrality parameter but I don't know how to start...
Thanks!
I had read that water is essential for any acid. When HCl is dissolved in water, it produces H+ ions which cause the litmus paper to change it colour! But if HCl gas is liquidified and then tested with liquid, what would be the results? As wel as this pure liquid HCl is corrosive or not?
Does anybody know of any studies that effect how society regulates neurotransmitters and/or hormones in the body; especially long term. Specifically any studies about how they (especially neurotransmitters) regulate in social groups. Its a theory I have and I'd like to see if there is anything...
Is the effect of gravity ever considered in particle accelerator experiments? I would think not with all the high energy, velocities, and stong electric fields in use. But I am interested if gravitational effects have ever been considered or adjusts made to compensate for gravity's downward...
I was watching a video of Michio Kaku. He said that when you go faster than light, time goes backwards and objects have negative mass.
Does SR really predict such FTL effects?

I have read from time to time (e.g. Lakowicz) that the fluorescence spectrum of a substance is not generally influenced by the wavelength excitation source. On the other had there is a correlation as exemplified in excitation-emission matrix spectra for example.
The obvious case is for...
If a probe is sent to the Tau Ceti system and does not accelerate outside the solar system (keeps a constant velocity when passing the heliosphere) will it not experience relitivistic effects? Could it then send a message back to Earth in 50 years for us?
How much power would be produced when using an independently powered supply of 100 pound/min air at 3bar/40F air on a 6.2L GM LS V8. Excess air will be vented to atmosphere with relief valves to stabilize the air flow to the throttle valve.
What are the factors need to be considered...
I am considering the effects on volumetric and mass flow rate for two conditions:
Condition 1) 1013mBar, 21C (Air density as per)
Condition 2) 700mBar (10,000ft) 21C (Air density as per)
Setup: A variable flow restrictor is connected to a constant source of oxygen at 50 psig. The variable...
So gravity bends space, and black holes bend space in a loop. Is it possible for there to be a gravitational field somewhere in space, just strong enough, that it bends the light emitted by our system back to us so we could see ourselves?
Homework Statement
For a zero initial deflection and for a finite initial velocity, the time dependence of the vibration response of an overdamped system to an impulse is given by:
(1) θ(t)=[I/(mω)√(ζ^2-1)][e^-(ζωt)][cosh(ω√(ζ^2-1))t]
which for large values of time becomes:
(2)...
The so called f (R)-gravity could be, in principle, able to explain the accelerated expansion of the Universe without adding unknown forms of dark energy/dark matter but, more simply, extending the General Relativity by generic functions of the Ricci scalar. However, a part several...
Hi,
Has anyone in recent times reproduced the experiments of Kristian Birkeland, WRT to his Saturn effect using his terrella?
If so what were the conditions?

hey guys,
im not really a physicist (so sorry if this sounds dumb I guess) but I came on here to ask a question i was meditating on while i was out on a walk --
I have a basic understanding of special relativity (like I said I'm not a physicist though and I haven't really taken any classes...
In a general situation, how do you change origin (mathematically speaking) in a physical context i.e. with position vectors, constant vectors, unit vectors to certain directions ... ?
I am a bit confused with the concept.
Let's say a receiving device that requires compressed air is 1.5 miles away from the source and demands 600 cubic feet per minute. Let's say the pipes have a diameter of four inches and already contain air at 90psi.
If friction in the pipes would be ignored, it would require the same amount...

Okay. So just too briefly outline my experiment: I have a pendulum bob attached to two cardboard discs, and am testing to see how the radius of the cardboard discs effects the damping of the simple harmonic oscillator (the pendulum).
I have results (such as the one below which...
I have been reading a lot about nuclear plants and how when things go wrong the whole area becomes inhabitable. I have been trying to understand certain things but i am not sure. I hope my understanding of it are not filled with self-inflicted misconceptions.

Hi, someone was telling me that if you have two metals in close contact (like, one sputtered onto the other or something) with each other, if they have different work functions, you'll get some sort of diode effect (even without either of them being doped) if you have a current running from one...
OK, so the moon has a rather large mass (I found somewhere a comparison with Earth which gave a value of about 75 billion trillion Kg/M3), but the spacecraft s Ebb and Flow are traveling rather fast with quite a lot of momentum(132KG each, 6050km/s = around 800000Kg m/s). So what sort of...
I've been wondering.. If a person (A) is, say, on top of Mt. Everest, he would be moving faster than a guy (B) at the foot of the mountain since A is further from the center of the earth, but he would also be experiencing a weaker gravitational force than B.
So, for which of the invidividuals...
This is something that just occurred to me. I was cleaning out an old closet when I came across some speaker wire, kind of like this.
I was wondering, what would happen if I wrapped that around a tesla coil secondary coil? You have two separate coils interwinding, essentially, so would the...

I came across this excellent forum :)
I am trying to figure out the solar wobble. When only looking at the Sun+Jupiter+Saturn, my intuitive interpretation is that the Sun will go faster/wobble more at Jupiter-Saturn-conjunction, and slower at oppositions. Is this correct?
If so, there...
There are two types of zeeman effect, one normal and the other one anormal, but why are they called so?
I mean what is so normal about the normal zeeman effect and what is so anormal about the anormal zeeman effect??
Assume the following hypothetical situation: an enormous body, 20,000 ly in diameter (I recognise that 'asteroids' per se tend to be smaller), approaches the Milky Way, perpendicular to its equatorial plane, and headed straight for planet Earth, or at least on a trajectory where it will...
So I understand the basics of the general and special relativistic effects on the speed of the satellite clocks onboard the GPS satellites, and why they are rigged to calculate time slower than an atomic clock at sea level.
But then, in several articles, I read that GPS receivers are also...
Hi guys :)

Consider a two-electron system in which both of electrons have the same spins. They like to repel each other and so it seems that the energy of the system will increase compared with the situation in which two-electron system is composed of opposite spins that they can settle in the same place...
Hey,
So if I were doing an experiment in which I have a current carrying coil, at what angle to the Earth's magnetic field would I need to rotate the coil in order to minimize the effect of Earth's field? I was assuming parallel to the direction of the Earth's magnetic field. I assume it has to...

I've noticed an interesting observation about how the lives of all the people in my elementary AIG (academically intellectually gifted). Out of the 11 of us, the only two not to go to college came from very poor homes. (Even from the beginning, only 4 of us were the kids of a...
Here's a question, though I'm not sure if it is suited to the biology section, since it might overlap physics and Earth science. Hell, i don't know; I'm an English major
Forgive me if i make any foolish assumptions.
To what extent has the Earth's mass affected the types of life that...

"Many years ago I spent a few weeks on the gaff-rigged topsail schooner Tradewind. I noticed one of the gaffs had a distinct bow in it and asked the skipper about it. He said they were hit broadside on by a rogue wave in sub-Antarctic waters south of New Zealand. The steel gaff had been bent by...
I am trying to develop a spreadsheet to calculate a convection coefficient with altitude as one of the inputs. What variables should I consider? The most obvious are pressure and temperature, but I'm sure there is more to it than that.
I have had a great deal of trouble finding sources that are specific as to how exactly radiation damages the body, it usually just says what damage radiation causes but not how it causes it, so I have compiled what I have found and I want to know if it is accurate and to fill in sequence of...

I didn't know about it before. My question is simple: what do you think of Randall's analysis of the physics here? Is he "on the ball?"
If we had a positive point charge of incredible quantity, does there exist an imaginary sphere about it, such that regardless of the initial speed and direction of any electron, that electron could not escape spiraling into the positive point charge?
Conversely, regardless of the initial...
I'm trying to increase my understanding of what happens to waves with interference so I'll ask the following question to try and do so.

If I want to measure the position of a particle, and to do so I bombard it with a photon. What attributes of the particle will this interaction affect?
I would think that it could affect both the particle's direction and its mass, which in turn would have an effect on both its position and its...
