What caused the 2014 Solomon Islands earthquake and Alaska earthquake?

Not the largest event in the last 24 Hrs. it was followed by a Mw 6.2, 94km WNW of Willow, Alaska at 1751UT. but because of its depth and distance, it doesn't show up well ... see the small set of surface waves between ~ 1830 and 1859UT

Hi Dave, what distance are you from the quake? What body wave phases can you identify? Which component is this, vertical?

2815 km +- ~ 10 km, P and S easily identifiable ( will label and re-upload the image) Yes this is vertical

just a quick "back of envelope" calculation

P velocity ~ 7.5 km / sec for 2800 km = 6.22 minutes

Quake origin time 0913.50UT P arrival time ~ 0918UT ( I haven't done analysis yet so just going by the view on seismogram) P travel time 4 - 5 minutes

We have little shade but plenty of wind on my property. The upshot of this is that I have to be judicious in how/where I put up shade-creating barriers in various places around my property to maximise shade without unduly large windage.
