Stargazing Light Source for Point source fibers - telescope

AI Thread Summary
For calibrating telescopes with fiber optics, various light sources can be utilized, including LEDs, which are commonly recommended. Green LEDs are particularly favored for their visibility and effectiveness in creating artificial stars. Several commercial options are available for those looking to purchase a suitable light source. The discussion highlights the importance of selecting the right wavelength for optimal results in point source calibration. Overall, using LEDs, especially in green, is a practical approach for telescope calibration.

Hi. I am wondering what kind of light sources are used if one is using a fiber to do a single point source or artificial star calibration on a telescope? Any commercial ones can do if anyone knows one.

I've heard that LED's can be used. I would use a green one of course.

Is a homemade radio telescope realistic? There seems to be a confluence of multiple technologies that makes the situation better than when I was a wee lad: software-defined radio (SDR), the easy availability of satellite dishes, surveillance drives, and fast CPUs. Let's take a step back - it is trivial to see the sun in radio. An old analog TV, a set of "rabbit ears" antenna, and you're good to go. Point the antenna at the sun (i.e. the ears are perpendicular to it) and there is...
