AI Thread Summary
The discussion revolves around analyzing attempts to answer a specific question, where the participant initially chose the 2nd and 5th answers but ultimately identified the correct responses as the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th options. The reasoning provided highlights that these choices relate to an object's behavior under non-zero force, specifically regarding acceleration and direction changes. The 5th option was dismissed because it described a vehicle moving in a straight line with constant acceleration, which does not meet the criteria. The conversation also touches on Newton's first law as a fundamental principle relevant to the question. Overall, the exchange emphasizes understanding the dynamics of forces acting on objects.

Homework Statement
Which of the following describes an object with a non-zero net force acting on it? Choose all that apply.
Relevant Equations
The truck slowed down while making a right turn.
The motorcycle traveled at a constant speed while making a u-turn.
The moped accelerated while making a left turn.
The car sped up from 50 mph to 65 mph while moving in a straight line.
The spaceship traveled at a constant speed in a straight line.
I attempted this question 3 times. The first time I picked the 2nd and 5th answer. The second time I picked the 2nd answer and the third time I picked the 5th answer.

That's all very good. However, to help other people even better, can you explain why you picked the first four choices and not the fifth choice?

I picked the first four because I looked up the what is happening to an object when a non zero force is acting upon it. It is when the object is either speeding up, slowing down or changing direction. Number 1, 3 and 4 are either speeding up or changing direction. Number 2 is changing direction. Number 5 does not qualify because the vehicle is moving in a straight line at a constant acceleration.

Very good! What fundamental equation covers this question?

Newton's first law? :)

Thread 'Collision of a bullet on a rod-string system: query'
In this question, I have a question. I am NOT trying to solve it, but it is just a conceptual question. Consider the point on the rod, which connects the string and the rod. My question: just before and after the collision, is ANGULAR momentum CONSERVED about this point? Lets call the point which connects the string and rod as P. Why am I asking this? : it is clear from the scenario that the point of concern, which connects the string and the rod, moves in a circular path due to the string...
Thread 'A cylinder connected to a hanged mass'
Let's declare that for the cylinder, mass = M = 10 kg Radius = R = 4 m For the wall and the floor, Friction coeff = ##\mu## = 0.5 For the hanging mass, mass = m = 11 kg First, we divide the force according to their respective plane (x and y thing, correct me if I'm wrong) and according to which, cylinder or the hanging mass, they're working on. Force on the hanging mass $$mg - T = ma$$ Force(Cylinder) on y $$N_f + f_w - Mg = 0$$ Force(Cylinder) on x $$T + f_f - N_w = Ma$$ There's also...
