Calculating Shear Stress in a Flange Coupling with 4 Bolts

AI Thread Summary
To calculate the shear stress on the bolts of a flange coupling transmitting 1500 Nm of torque, the formula fs = F/A is applied. The torque can be converted to force using t = F*r, where r is the radius of the bolt's PCD. The calculated shear stress aligns with the back-of-the-book answer of 85.3 MPa. The discussion highlights a lack of provided formulas from TAFE, which caused initial confusion. Understanding these calculations is essential for accurate engineering assessments.

Homework Statement

A flange coupling is use to transmit torque of 1500 Nm between two shafts. The coupling has four 8mm dia. bolts equally spaced on a PCD of 175mm. Determine the shear stress on the bolts

Homework Equations

fs=\frac{F}{A}

The Attempt at a Solution

Back of the book answer = 85.3MPa. but I don't know how they get this answer.

It's ok, disaster averted.

Just use t=F*r to convert the torque to a force acting on the bolt's.

Unfortunately TAFE forgot to give me this formula before giving me this question.

Thread 'Have I solved this structural engineering equation correctly?'
Hi all, I have a structural engineering book from 1979. I am trying to follow it as best as I can. I have come to a formula that calculates the rotations in radians at the rigid joint that requires an iterative procedure. This equation comes in the form of: $$ x_i = \frac {Q_ih_i + Q_{i+1}h_{i+1}}{4K} + \frac {C}{K}x_{i-1} + \frac {C}{K}x_{i+1} $$ Where: ## Q ## is the horizontal storey shear ## h ## is the storey height ## K = (6G_i + C_i + C_{i+1}) ## ## G = \frac {I_g}{h} ## ## C...
