Calculating Velocity After Collision of Two Cars

AI Thread Summary
To find the speed of two cars that collide and stick together, calculate the total momentum before the collision, which is 36,252 kg·m/s. This is derived from the moving car's mass (1007 kg) and velocity (36 m/s) combined with the stationary car's mass (2499 kg). The total momentum after the collision remains the same, as momentum is conserved. To find the final speed of the combined mass, divide the total momentum by the total mass of both cars (3506 kg). The resulting speed after the collision can be calculated using these values.

A car with a mass of 1007 kg is moving 36 m/s, strikes a 2499 kg car at rest. if the two cars stick together, with what speed do they move?

I tried using the equation mass of object 1st car*(initial velocity of car 1 + initial velocticy
of car 2) the divide by the mass of car 2. i don't know what to do please help

just take it slowly …

i] what is total momentum before?

ii] what is total momentum after?

ok thanks ill remember that :) ok the total momentum before is 36252 all i did was mass times velocity and add both momentum for both and that is what i got and after the collision it is the same right?

that's right!

your english is difficult to understand

yes, the total momentum after is also 36252 …

so what is the speed?

Thread 'Variable mass system : water sprayed into a moving container'
Starting with the mass considerations #m(t)# is mass of water #M_{c}# mass of container and #M(t)# mass of total system $$M(t) = M_{C} + m(t)$$ $$\Rightarrow \frac{dM(t)}{dt} = \frac{dm(t)}{dt}$$ $$P_i = Mv + u \, dm$$ $$P_f = (M + dm)(v + dv)$$ $$\Delta P = M \, dv + (v - u) \, dm$$ $$F = \frac{dP}{dt} = M \frac{dv}{dt} + (v - u) \frac{dm}{dt}$$ $$F = u \frac{dm}{dt} = \rho A u^2$$ from conservation of momentum , the cannon recoils with the same force which it applies. $$\quad \frac{dm}{dt}...
I was thinking using 2 purple mattress samples, and taping them together, I do want other ideas though, the main guidelines are; Must have a volume LESS than 1600 cubic centimeters, and CAN'T exceed 25 cm in ANY direction. Must be LESS than 1 kg. NO parachutes. NO glue or Tape can touch the egg. MUST be able to take egg out in less than 1 minute. Grade A large eggs will be used.
