Doubts regarding 3 question form motion of a particle

AI Thread Summary
The discussion revolves around doubts related to three physics problems concerning the motion of a particle. For the first problem, the user is trying to derive a general equation for distance after deceleration, noting that the body does not come to rest immediately. They reference a similar problem from Irodov's book, which assumes equal magnitudes of acceleration and deceleration. In the third problem, the user attempted to use vector analysis and the dot product but did not reach a solution, seeking further assistance. The forum members encourage patience and suggest providing more details for better help.

Doubts regarding 3 question form motion of a particle! :)

Homework Statement

Doubts related to 3 problems..I have uploaded the question up in the attachment.

Homework Equations

The Attempt at a Solution

for question one,the body doesn't come to rest,s is the total dist at any instant after it started decelerating with retardation β.If it comes to rest, answer is 2s/v,and such a problem is there in irodovs general problems book..but how to get a general equation, for any instant after it starts decelrating with b?

question 3:i attempted using vectors and taking dot product equal to zero, but didnt arrive anywher,so someone please help! :)

For Problem #1: You are correct in regards to you conclusion that the car nedds to come to rest in order for a solution to be possible.

As regards the somewhat similar Irodov problem, I believe that the Irodov problem assumes that the magnitude of the acceleration, α, is equal to the magnitude of the deceleration, β. In that case, the total time is s/vaverage = 2s/vmax. You generally would want to express this answer in terms of s and α, not s and vmax .

As for your attempt at a solution to #3: You will need to give more details as to what you tried, before we can be of much help.

Kindly see the attached pdf. My attempt to solve it, is in it. I'm wondering if my solution is right. My idea is this: At any point of time, the ball may be assumed to be at an incline which is at an angle of θ(kindly see both the pics in the pdf file). The value of θ will continuously change and so will the value of friction. I'm not able to figure out, why my solution is wrong, if it is wrong .
TL;DR Summary: I came across this question from a Sri Lankan A-level textbook. Question - An ice cube with a length of 10 cm is immersed in water at 0 °C. An observer observes the ice cube from the water, and it seems to be 7.75 cm long. If the refractive index of water is 4/3, find the height of the ice cube immersed in the water. I could not understand how the apparent height of the ice cube in the water depends on the height of the ice cube immersed in the water. Does anyone have an...
