Finding the Right Software for Building Energy Simulation

AI Thread Summary
Several software options for building energy simulation are discussed, including CHVC and Carrier, with a recommendation to search for "HVAC load calculation software" for more choices. Users emphasize the importance of customizable features, such as wall thickness, insulation, and material layers, to accurately calculate heating and cooling needs. Specific instructions for modifying wall properties in CHVC are provided, including switching to metric units and accessing the wall builder feature. The conversation highlights the necessity of professional-grade software for detailed energy analysis, which often comes with a higher cost. Overall, the discussion focuses on finding effective tools for precise energy simulation in building design.

Does anyone know any good software to calculate the need for cooling/heating and such in builidings? One where I can change properties of almost every building aspect, such as wall-thickness, insulation, sun conditions, windows, outside temp, inside temp, and so on to find the energy needed to keep a specific temp inside while the outside conditions are such and such.

I use CHVC: www.elitesoft.com

I've heard Carrier has a decent one too. Do a Google for "hvac load calculation software" and you'll get several more. Be aware, though, that most of these are professional products and generally have professional pricetags.

Ah, excellent, I've used this one. Then you might be able to answer this question: how to I change the thickness of walls? And also, I would like to use custom walls, floors and ceilings, since the preset choices are US standards which don't tell me ****, but I'm not sure how to "design" a custom let's say wall with insulation thickness, and other layers of material that might be in it. Any suggestions?

I'll give you a walkthrough at work tomorrow...

As long as it is possible I'm satisfied, but a walkthrough would be nice :-)

Well, first off, in the General Project Data ("G" button in the toolbar), there is an option for switching to Metric units. Then in the "Master" menu ("M" button in the toolbar), there is a tab for roofs, walls, and partitions. Under "walls", there are four drop-down menus. The one on the left brings up a box allowing you to build your own. The second one gives common wall types (it's what I usually use). The third one gives a calculator similar to the wall builder in the first tab.

Hi all, I have a question. So from the derivation of the Isentropic process relationship PV^gamma = constant, there is a step dW = PdV, which can only be said for quasi-equilibrium (or reversible) processes. As such I believe PV^gamma = constant (and the family of equations) should not be applicable to just adiabatic processes? Ie, it should be applicable only for adiabatic + reversible = isentropic processes? However, I've seen couple of online notes/books, and...
I have an engine that uses a dry sump oiling system. The oil collection pan has three AN fittings to use for scavenging. Two of the fittings are approximately on the same level, the third is about 1/2 to 3/4 inch higher than the other two. The system ran for years with no problem using a three stage pump (one pressure and two scavenge stages). The two scavenge stages were connected at times to any two of the three AN fittings on the tank. Recently I tried an upgrade to a four stage pump...
