Formation of accretion disk / frame drag

AI Thread Summary
Frame dragging significantly contributes to the formation of accretion disks around neutron stars and black holes, particularly in supermassive black holes and active galactic nuclei. Research indicates that frame dragging can influence the dynamics of line-emitting accretion disks, providing a potential method for detecting its effects. Key studies highlight the relationship between frame dragging and stable Keplerian accretion disks, especially within the constraints of a Schwarzschild metric. Various academic papers explore the implications of frame dragging on phenomena such as iron line profiles in X-ray binaries and relativistic jets. Overall, the discussion underscores the importance of frame dragging in astrophysical processes related to black holes.

came across the concept of Frame dragging.
i cannot find if this phenomena also aids in addition to the conversation of angular momentum the formation of an accretion disk around neutron stars/black holes.
cheers

It seems clear that yes, Frame dragging does contribute to disk formation around supermassive black holes and active galactic nuclei. Here are some references:

Excerpt from the “Discussion” section:
“For these reasons, we feel justified in choosing diagnostics of a line-emitting accretion disk as a probe for frame-dragging effects in the nuclei of active galaxies. As noted before (Laor 1991), perhaps the best hope of detecting the frame-dragging effect is to spot a stable Keplerian accretion disk at radii below the limit of 6Rg imposed in a Schwarzschild metric.”

Is a homemade radio telescope realistic? There seems to be a confluence of multiple technologies that makes the situation better than when I was a wee lad: software-defined radio (SDR), the easy availability of satellite dishes, surveillance drives, and fast CPUs. Let's take a step back - it is trivial to see the sun in radio. An old analog TV, a set of "rabbit ears" antenna, and you're good to go. Point the antenna at the sun (i.e. the ears are perpendicular to it) and there is...
3I/ATLAS, also known as C/2025 N1 (ATLAS) and formerly designated as A11pl3Z, is an iinterstellar comet. It was discovered by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) station at Río Hurtado, Chile on 1 July 2025. Note: it was mentioned (as A11pl3Z) by DaveE in a new member's introductory thread. https://www.physicsforums.com/threads/brian-cox-lead-me-here.1081670/post-7274146 https://earthsky.org/space/new-interstellar-object-candidate-heading-toward-the-sun-a11pl3z/ One...
