AI Thread Summary
The Dell XPS Studio 9100 has been introduced, and users migrating from Windows XP SP3 to Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit are seeking ways to integrate their old applications seamlessly. While some XP programs may work directly on Windows 7, others may require compatibility mode, and some may not function at all. Users are encouraged to check Microsoft's compatibility database for specific applications and to familiarize themselves with Windows 7's compatibility mode features. In cases where old software cannot be made to work, purchasing new software may be necessary.

The new Dell XPS Studio 9100 has arrived. It has been about 8 years since I have migrated to a new PC, new OS, etc, and I am out of practice. I am migrating from XP SP3 to Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, and I would like to be able to seamlessly integrate some old favorite apps into the new system. Is there a painless way to do this? I'm planning on keeping the old Dell Dimension 8400 as an emergency backup, but there are a LOT of installation disks and documentation that has gone missing, since my wife and I moved here about 6 years ago. Plus, I have no idea if W7HP has maintained backward compatibility to the XP OS. Any advice will be appreciated.

There is no definitive answer. Some XP programs will work outright. Some need use of the compatibility mode features and some just won't work ever.

Try searching to see if MS has a record of your program here

Thanks, Greg. I may have to spring for some new software if I can't get things to work.

In my discussions elsewhere, I've noticed a lot of disagreement regarding AI. A question that comes up is, "Is AI hype?" Unfortunately, when this question is asked, the one asking, as far as I can tell, may mean one of three things which can lead to lots of confusion. I'll list them out now for clarity. 1. Can AI do everything a human can do and how close are we to that? 2. Are corporations and governments using the promise of AI to gain more power for themselves? 3. Are AI and transhumans...
Sorry if 'Profile Badge' is not the correct term. I have an MS 365 subscription and I've noticed on my Word documents the small circle with my initials in it is sometimes different in colour document to document (it's the circle at the top right of the doc, that, when you hover over it it tells you you're signed in; if you click on it you get a bit more info). Last night I had four docs with a red circle, one with blue. When I closed the blue and opened it again it was red. Today I have 3...
