Help identifying this pivoting joint mechanism

In summary, the conversation discusses the identification and understanding of a specific pivoting joint. The joint appears to be a basic swivel arrangement with an outer hollow cylinder that can rotate on a solid inner cylinder. A disc is bolted on to keep the outer cylinder in place. The conversation concludes with gratitude for the helpful input.

Hello all,

I need help identifying the following pivoting joint, and also coming to an understanding of how this particular joint works and is designed...

Thanks for your help!

It looks like a basic swivel arrangement. There's probably a name for it but I don't know what that is. It looks like the outside is a hollow cylinder, which slides onto a close-fitting, solid, inner cylinder on which it can swivel. A disc is then bolted on the outside of the inner cylinder to keep the outer cylinder in place. In the photo you can see the allen bolt that accomplishes that.

What is a pivoting joint mechanism?

A pivoting joint mechanism is a type of joint that allows for rotational movement between two or more parts of a structure. This movement is typically achieved through the use of a pivot point or axis.

How does a pivoting joint mechanism work?

A pivoting joint mechanism works by using a pivot point or axis to allow for rotational movement between two or more parts. This can be achieved through the use of a hinge, ball and socket, or other types of joints.

What are some examples of pivoting joint mechanisms?

Some common examples of pivoting joint mechanisms include door hinges, knee joints, and ball and socket joints in the human body. In engineering, pivoting joint mechanisms are also used in various machines and structures such as cranes and folding chairs.

What are the advantages of using a pivoting joint mechanism?

Pivoting joint mechanisms offer several advantages, including the ability to achieve rotational movement between parts, high load-bearing capabilities, and flexibility in design. They also allow for smooth and efficient movement, making them suitable for various applications.

What are some factors to consider when designing a pivoting joint mechanism?

When designing a pivoting joint mechanism, factors such as the type of movement required, load-bearing capacity, materials used, and environmental conditions must be taken into account. It is essential to ensure that the mechanism is strong, durable, and properly lubricated for optimal performance.
