Computer Help trying to build computer lab.

AI Thread Summary
Setting up a computer lab for a school involves several key considerations, particularly regarding server choice and budget. The discussion highlights the need to determine the number of computers, with a suggestion of around 20. The choice between Windows Server and Ubuntu is also debated, with an acknowledgment that Windows Server can be costly. The project's funding source is questioned, as well as the intended role of the server—whether it will function solely as a file server or support a more complex network with Active Directory Domain Services (AD-DS). Establishing a clear budget is essential for making informed decisions about the setup.

Any answer really depends on what you are trying to accomplish.

Actual Windows Server software is expensive isn't it? Who is funding this project?

what exactly is the role for this server?
is it just a plain old file server or are you looking to setup a small network with AD-DS

what is your budget?
