AI Thread Summary
To minimize the slow startup and shutdown times of a Dell n series laptop, it's essential to reduce the number of programs and services that load at startup. Upgrading to a solid-state drive (SSD) can significantly improve boot times, although it may come with limited storage capacity. Utilizing sleep or suspend mode instead of fully shutting down can also enhance usability, allowing for quicker access while keeping the laptop plugged in. Additionally, checking for unnecessary background applications and potential viruses is crucial, as they can contribute to sluggish performance. For those comfortable with BIOS settings, making adjustments to skip the POST process may further speed up boot times. If issues persist, considering a system reformat and restoring data from backups can be an effective solution.

I've got a Dell n series laptop. Thing is it takes aproximately 2-3 minutes to power up and it also takes an awful lot of time to open a new windows (say My Computer) and to shut down. How can I minimize these times?

A big help is reducing the number of programs and services loaded at startup.

Solid state drives are also wonderful if you can afford one and tolerate a smaller drive capacity.

why not use suspend or sleep mode ie don't turn it off only close the cover but keep it plugged into the outlet. It uses much less battery but still drains it so you need to keep it plugged in.

It should be quickly usable as opening the cover wakes it up within a few seconds but not as fast as an ipad.

Yeah, I'd start by looking at the back apps running and see what programs are in the startup menu you don't want automatically loaded. It's also possible to make bios adjustments for faster boot times like skipping the post, but if you don't know much about bios adjustments I recommend caution.

It's also possible you have a virus which is doing 'who knows what' in the background. Have you checked the system with virus detection software?

2-3 minutes sounds like registry bloat. You could spend several hours mucking about with it, or you could just reformat the thing and restore your data from backup / reconnect to the cloud. Once I learned how to make backups I forgot how to fix Windows. I don't use Windows anymore however.

In my discussions elsewhere, I've noticed a lot of disagreement regarding AI. A question that comes up is, "Is AI hype?" Unfortunately, when this question is asked, the one asking, as far as I can tell, may mean one of three things which can lead to lots of confusion. I'll list them out now for clarity. 1. Can AI do everything a human can do and how close are we to that? 2. Are corporations and governments using the promise of AI to gain more power for themselves? 3. Are AI and transhumans...
Thread 'ChatGPT Examples, Good and Bad'
I've been experimenting with ChatGPT. Some results are good, some very very bad. I think examples can help expose the properties of this AI. Maybe you can post some of your favorite examples and tell us what they reveal about the properties of this AI. (I had problems with copy/paste of text and formatting, so I'm posting my examples as screen shots. That is a promising start. But then I provided values V=1, R1=1, R2=2, R3=3 and asked for the value of I. At first, it said...
