Courses How Do Independent Study Courses Function in Academia?

AI Thread Summary
To initiate an independent study, a student must first approach a professor to seek their supervision. Once a professor agrees, the student needs to complete a proposal form, which must be signed by both the professor and the department chair. This form is then submitted to the provost's office for approval. After receiving approval, the student can register for the independent study course alongside their other classes. Procedures may vary by institution, so it's advisable to check with local guidelines.

So how do these work? Do you go up to a professor and request his assistance for independent study, after which point this whole deal is made official and you're credited for it? Thanks in advance.

The exact procedures probably vary from one school to another, so you should ask locally!

Here, you have to get a professor to agree to supervise you, then fill out a proposal form, get it signed by the professor and the department chair, and submit it to the provost's office for approval. After it's approved, you can register for the course along with your other courses.

Hey, I am Andreas from Germany. I am currently 35 years old and I want to relearn math and physics. This is not one of these regular questions when it comes to this matter. So... I am very realistic about it. I know that there are severe contraints when it comes to selfstudy compared to a regular school and/or university (structure, peers, teachers, learning groups, tests, access to papers and so on) . I will never get a job in this field and I will never be taken serious by "real"...
