How Does Exciting a Hydrogen Atom Affect Its Kinetic and Potential Energy?

AI Thread Summary
Exciting a hydrogen atom from its ground state affects both its kinetic energy (K.E) and potential energy (P.E). The discussion revolves around the relationship between energy levels, where an increase in the principal quantum number (n) leads to changes in K.E and P.E. One participant argues that both K.E and P.E should decrease, while another points out that the book's answer indicates K.E decreases and P.E increases. The confusion arises from the negative sign in the potential energy expression, suggesting that as the magnitude of potential energy decreases, the actual potential energy increases. Ultimately, the correct interpretation hinges on understanding the mathematical relationships governing these energy changes.

1. When a hydrogen atom is excited from the ground state;
a) K.E & P.E both increases
b)K.E & P.E both decreases
c) K.E increase and P.E decrease
d) K.E decrease & K.E increase.

ATTEMPT

K.E\propto1/n2

P.E\propto1/n2

so n increases both decreases. >>>>option b is right for me.

but the correct answer given in book is option d

wer I'm wrong

the thing you foud for PE is its mag only
write the expression of PE of electron and proton
here you'll see a - sign
so if mag decrease ... due to - sign ... PE inc

Thread 'Variable mass system : water sprayed into a moving container'
Starting with the mass considerations #m(t)# is mass of water #M_{c}# mass of container and #M(t)# mass of total system $$M(t) = M_{C} + m(t)$$ $$\Rightarrow \frac{dM(t)}{dt} = \frac{dm(t)}{dt}$$ $$P_i = Mv + u \, dm$$ $$P_f = (M + dm)(v + dv)$$ $$\Delta P = M \, dv + (v - u) \, dm$$ $$F = \frac{dP}{dt} = M \frac{dv}{dt} + (v - u) \frac{dm}{dt}$$ $$F = u \frac{dm}{dt} = \rho A u^2$$ from conservation of momentum , the cannon recoils with the same force which it applies. $$\quad \frac{dm}{dt}...
I was thinking using 2 purple mattress samples, and taping them together, I do want other ideas though, the main guidelines are; Must have a volume LESS than 1600 cubic centimeters, and CAN'T exceed 25 cm in ANY direction. Must be LESS than 1 kg. NO parachutes. NO glue or Tape can touch the egg. MUST be able to take egg out in less than 1 minute. Grade A large eggs will be used.
