How to find thickness of steel plate

AI Thread Summary
To determine the required thickness of a steel plate for safely covering a 300 mm diameter hole under a 2.5-tonne machine, consider the load distribution, which in this case is a point load due to the machine's tracks. Reference materials like Machinery's Handbook can provide guidance on diaphragm deflections and material strength. By selecting an acceptable deflection limit, one can calculate the necessary plate thickness. It is important to account for potential additional loads, such as stones carried by the machine. Proper calculations will ensure the steel plate can support the weight without bending.

I have a 300 mm diameter hole in the ground surrounded by concrete. This hole will be covered by a steel plate. I need to get a machine of weight 2.5 tonnes across this hole safely without any bending of the steel plate.
How would i calculate the required thickness of the plate?
Thank you
Ron.

The machine is on a skid? Rollers? Wheels? Casters? How is the load distributed?

It is a brokk, so it will be tracks. As the brokk may carry stones etc, I am assuming a point load distribution for worst case scenairo.
Thank you

A Brokk. Down a one foot hole? You've got a copy of Machinery's Handbook handy? Look at diaphragm deflections in the strength of materials section. Pick what deflection you can live with and back out the plate thickness.

I don't have the handbook with me but i will have a look at it later when i go home. But thank you for your help and advice. :)

Thread 'I need a concave mirror with a focal length length of 150 feet'
I need to cut down a 3 year old dead tree from top down so tree causes no damage with small pieces falling. I need a mirror with a focal length of 150 ft. 12" diameter to 36" diameter will work good but I can't think of any easy way to build it. Nothing like this for sale on Ebay. I have a 30" Fresnel lens that I use to burn stumps it works great. Tree service wants $2000.
Hi all, i have some questions about the tesla turbine: is a tesla turbine more efficient than a steam engine or a stirling engine ? about the discs of the tesla turbine warping because of the high speed rotations; does running the engine on a lower speed solve that or will the discs warp anyway after time ? what is the difference in efficiency between the tesla turbine running at high speed and running it at a lower speed ( as fast as possible but low enough to not warp de discs) and: i...
