Internal stress in the Al extrusion

In summary, internal stress in Al extrusions is caused by uneven cooling during the manufacturing process, which can lead to warping, twisting, cracking, and dimensional changes. While it is difficult to completely eliminate internal stress, it can be minimized through careful control of the extrusion process and detected through visual inspection or specialized tools. Methods for reducing internal stress include post-extrusion heat treatments and proper handling and storage techniques.

Can anybody tell the stress developed during extrusion of Al Alloy. More importantly, is there a type of Al alloy that prefer least amount of stress.

work hardening I would think. Prefer the least amount of stress...I think it would be an aluminium that has undergone significant Ostwald ripening.

It will also depend on the temperature of extrusion. Higher temperature - less stress.

1. What causes internal stress in an Al extrusion?

Internal stress in Al extrusions is caused by uneven cooling during the manufacturing process. When one side of the extrusion cools faster than the other, it creates tension within the material, leading to internal stress.

2. How does internal stress affect the quality of an Al extrusion?

Internal stress can cause warping, twisting, and cracking in the Al extrusion, which can greatly reduce its strength and structural integrity. It can also cause dimensional changes, making it difficult to accurately fit the extrusion into its intended use.

3. Can internal stress be eliminated in the manufacturing process?

While it is difficult to completely eliminate internal stress, it can be minimized through careful control of the extrusion process. Properly calibrated cooling systems and uniform heating can help reduce internal stress in Al extrusions.

4. How can internal stress be detected in an Al extrusion?

Internal stress can be detected through visual inspection for signs of warping or cracking, as well as through specialized stress analysis tools such as X-ray diffraction or ultrasonic testing.

5. What are some methods for reducing internal stress in Al extrusions?

Some methods for reducing internal stress in Al extrusions include post-extrusion heat treatments, such as annealing or stress relief, as well as proper handling and storage techniques to prevent further stress from occurring during transportation and storage.
