AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers around the implications of a public policy aimed at preventing child abandonment and ensuring child safety. The policy is designed to provide parents with a legal alternative to abandoning their children, which could lead to unsafe conditions or tragic outcomes. Critics highlight the emotional toll on older children left in emergency rooms as a consequence of this policy. The original intent was to protect infants, but there are concerns about the law being reinterpreted to extend its application to infants up to three days old. The conversation raises questions about the effectiveness and moral implications of such policies, particularly in balancing parental rights and child welfare.
To give parents an alternative to abandoning children on the sly (probably in unsafe conditions) or "accidentally" doing something which causes the child's death.
