AI Thread Summary
Justice Stevens is set to retire at the end of the current Supreme Court session, prompting discussions about his potential successor. The conversation highlights the expectation that President Obama will nominate a liberal candidate with significant experience and minimal resistance. There is concern about possible Republican filibusters, which could backfire politically if perceived as obstructionism against the President. Suggestions for potential nominees include Gary Locke, the Secretary of Commerce, who would be the first Asian-American on the Supreme Court. His prior Senate vetting could make him a challenging target for GOP opposition. The overarching strategy discussed involves selecting a reasonable candidate that Republicans might still attempt to filibuster, framing their actions as obstructionist to sway Independent voters.

I think he'll choose the Liberal with the least resistance (and more experience this time).

Hard to tell what his path might be. Republicans in the Senate are telegraphing a willingness to filibuster, though that might be quite problematic with Independents if it is seen as just one more attempt to deny Obama anything he wants. Gary Locke would be an interesting choice. Secretary of Commerce, already vetted by the Senate would be the first Asian-American on the bench. He's probably not on anybody's short-list, but he'd be a hard nominee for the GOP to filibuster without more backlash from Independent voters.

I think that the right political move would be to choose the most reasonable candidate that the Republicans would filibuster, then accuse them of obstructing.

They've been doing nothing but obstructing for the last year, and no one seems to care. What's one more?

Similar to the 2024 thread, here I start the 2025 thread. As always it is getting increasingly difficult to predict, so I will make a list based on other article predictions. You can also leave your prediction here. Here are the predictions of 2024 that did not make it: Peter Shor, David Deutsch and all the rest of the quantum computing community (various sources) Pablo Jarrillo Herrero, Allan McDonald and Rafi Bistritzer for magic angle in twisted graphene (various sources) Christoph...
Thread 'My experience as a hostage'
I believe it was the summer of 2001 that I made a trip to Peru for my work. I was a private contractor doing automation engineering and programming for various companies, including Frito Lay. Frito had purchased a snack food plant near Lima, Peru, and sent me down to oversee the upgrades to the systems and the startup. Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
